Can you recommend decent salt and pepper grinders?

Ours don't seem to be working any more, and I'm struggling to find a set with decent reviews. A lot I have tried before seem to need a lot of twists for the tiniest amount of stuff to come out, usually the pepper.

May I have your recommendations for decent grinders which last a long time and don't cost a fortune? Thanks.

The best one I have ever owned!

Peugeot? I’m doubting myself but I think that’s what we’ve got and they’ve lasted 10 years so far.

Tried different makes but always problems with the ceramic grinders usually breaking. I can highly recommend OXO salt and pepper grinders. We have 3 pairs/sets. All are used and the last pair was purchased in 2011.

SM4713 · 01/09/2023 21:22

Peugeot! I vaguely think they were the original or one of the original grinder types and have stood the test of time. We've had ours maybe 7yrs and they still look new and grind as they did when bought.

The original set had a slight issue and was very stiff to change the grinding size. The company changed them with no issue. Currently looking for buy another set. The longest lasting grinders I've ever had.

I’ve had the salt and pepper in these (oxo good grips) for 18 years (wedding gift list!) and still as good as day one.

bonus being no ‘shedding’ as you have to invert to use. Plus multi coarse options so very fine or chunky immediately.

Peugeot, every time

SwedishEdith · 01/09/2023 21:30

Peugeot as well.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 01/09/2023 21:32

I’ve got Peugeot, but don’t particularly rate them.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 01/09/2023 21:33

Oooh, thanks everyone - 3 contenders! Will look at these, much appreciated.

My mum gave me a wooden Cole and Mason salt and pepper grinder set (ceramic grinder for the salt) over 20 years ago. I've used them daily and they're still going strong. Hopefully they're still as good, might be worth investigating anyway. I think of her every time I use them.

smokingcarriageonly · 01/09/2023 21:53

We've had Peugeot s&p for 10-15yrs. They're reliable. (Don't use the salt anymore, just easier to use Maldon.)

Sometimes the mechanism gets a little sluggish and needs a good tap to clear it but I prefer finely ground pepper, I think that's what clogs it.

Every other pepper grinder I've owned has stopped working so it's impressive that this one is still going strong.

We’ve had this electric grinder set for over 10 years. Works perfectly with a new set of batteries every year or two, and easier than hand grinding.

Another OXO fan here, had ours for many years now. Got them from Lakeland.

RelaxedPigeon · 01/09/2023 22:56

Peugeot

Juxxi Professional Rechargeable Automatic Seasoning Mills - Set of 2 Easy to Use Adjustable and Refillable Gravity Operated Stainless Steel Electric Salt and Pepper Grinders with Glass Jars - Gift Set amzn.eu/d/2edKWIl

We have these. Had them about 18 months and they get used most weekdays. Not had to charge the batteries, yet.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2023 23:29

Le Creuset. They come in gorgeous colours too.

LoveRules · 01/09/2023 23:30

Love the OXO ones with no shedding and inverted design. Have a sweet little wooden tray to keep them neat too

JulesJules · 01/09/2023 23:39

The Oxo ones here too. By far the best ones I've ever had.

ramonaquimby · 02/09/2023 12:09

a vote for bodum in this corner

Cynderella · 02/09/2023 21:49

Another vote for Ikea spice mills for coarse sea salt and for peppercorns. We do have a more expensive pepper mill, but the Ikea ones work just as well.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/09/2023 23:06

Thanks all, was veering towards Oxo based on comparing online reviews, but will check at these new suggestions also. I knew Mumsnet wouldn't disappoint on this mundane but important question!

I third the IKEA ones, not fancy, but cheap and work well. Although the Le Creuset ones are also fab if you can be a bit more spendy.
