Decent mattress that's not too expensive

Hi all, as it says in the title, I'm looking for a decent mattress that's not too expensive. It's needed for a standard double bed size. Any recommendations?

Hi,
I am also looking for beds with mattresses (single) for the guest room. Mainly the grandchildren so I am interested in the thread. I have heard mentioned on here many times that IKEA pocket spring mattresses are good and not too expensive. I haven’t tried these myself.

JaukiVexnoydi · 30/08/2023 12:09

Define "too expensive".

For me, I place a very high value on being able to sleep well and I didn't think £1000 was too much to pay for a high quality mattress that would support excellent sleep for at least 10 years so less than £2 per week. The same shop had options at £3000 if I wanted silk or organic wool etc.

The first mattress I ever bought was £100 and was awful to sleep on once it was a year old. If I had replaced it every year it would have cost the same as one good quality one (I didn't- I just had terrible sleep on a lumpy mattress for years)

I have an IKEA and it’s fine for me for everyday use. Some of my (adult) kids have replaced their old non-Ikea mattresses with new mattresses going for top of the range brands. They feel fine but I wouldn’t pay many many times more for them versus my Ikea, particularly if only for spare bed and grandkids.

Simba ! So comfy

cheapskatemum · 30/08/2023 22:38

Thank you all. I sleep on an IKEA mattress and would buy one (I'm buying for DS3), but I believe their bed sizes are different to standard UK bed sizes & he's got a 4'6" wide bed.

Will definitely look at Simba.

I don't have thousands to spend on a mattress, much as I'd love to.

IKEA do various sizes, UK as well as European lengths. We have a Hovag (I think) sprung mattress for DD in a UK standard size. It seems great to me though I suspect she is not that fussy. Reviews for it looked excellent when I was buying.

People love or hate the new style memory foam/composite ones. I have an Emma and I wouldn't recommend but others seem to get on with it. I slept on the sofa for nearly a month after it was delivered because the smell gave me migraines. I can't imagine this is typical though!

Millbrook, they're amazing.

ibsbelly · 31/08/2023 07:17

I hated my Simba mattress. Bought one after that that was expensive. Hate that too. Stayed in a Premier Inn and had the best nights sleep. Totally overjoyed to find out you can buy their mattresses. I think it's £750 for a King size - definitely going to be buying one of those.

I have an orthopaedic Hypnos and it's bliss.

UncleBryn · 31/08/2023 07:35

We bought a Nectar one and love it. Was good value for money and came with extras, duvet, pillows and bedding set. We recommended it to friends who then bought the same and they also love theirs.

cheapskatemum · 31/08/2023 22:13

Thank you all, I will check out all your recommendations. I like the Premier Inn mattresses too, @ibsbelly.

That's great that IKEA do UK sizes now too. DS lives between 2 IKEAS, so shouldn't need it delivered.

Brilliant, I hope you like it! They are British made too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/09/2023 23:05

I've just ordered a Millbrook too! Thanks everybody Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/09/2023 09:24

@cheapskatemum are you pleased with your mattress? Mine's arriving today Grin

Gardenerboo · 05/09/2023 09:26

Can’t fault ikea in this house. We have double and singles and they’re great.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/09/2023 11:09

Well, the delivery guys have just been and say they won't attempt to get it up my stairs! Confused
The stairs are narrow but it's only a double mattress and there are two that already got up there with no problem.
So I've had no choice but to cancel the order. Back to square one.

cheapskatemum · 07/09/2023 22:24

I'm so sorry to hear that @BoreOfWhabylon. Fortunately DS's flat is on the ground floor. He & his girlfriend love it.
