Red wine spill

dh just slepped a bottle of red over window seat cushion. Soaked cover in cold water and applied salt , any other ideas before I risk it in machine . Suspect it isn't really a wasjhable fabric btw .

I would try handwashing (lukewarm with bio detergent) rather than machine wash. Give it a gentle spin in the machine and then hang to dry. hth

Salt's not that good IME - not sure if the salt will have set the stain now, but what I use is cold water and hand soap (Imperial Leather particularly good ) - it turns the stain black, but when you wash it comes out.

ok salt off, vanish on , rinsed then found some Desolve-it spray . Will have to go in machine I think , on a coldish gentle cycle.

Stain is greyish blue now , hard to tell as cover is a blue/pink sort of check anyway. Will see how it looks later.

Peroxide solution. Sounds drastic I know but it took red wine out of our beige fabric sofa (and didn't bleach it!).

Well it is still damp and cans ee a feitnish blue mark . Wil put it out on line later whne sun comes out. No peroxide here but do you have to apply when spill is wet ?

Anyway faint blue isn't bad!

Loads of American sites say use equal parts hydrogen peroxide and washing up liquid (at least they say "dish soap" but I think that's what they mean) - dab it on with a sponge and then wash again.

Or - did you try hand soap yesterday? If not you could try that (and then wash it again).

thanks, looking at it now on the line I think it will be acceptably feint , for now anyway. We need to review the colour scheme (we inherited all the soft furnishings) at some point as a bit dated. Discovered dd has got felt tip on it as well

I used to work for Chem-dry the best thing to do is put plenty of water on the stain and get as much out with a towel then get yourself down to the supermarket and get yourself some fabric bleach spray it on and wait for it to dry. It will not get the stain out but it will make it invisable, If your not happy with doing it yourself speak to your local Chem-dry and ask them for your cushion to be treated with a chemical called D.I its great stuff and will get rid of the stain before your eyes. DO NOT USE VANISH, 1001, OR ANY OTHER STAIN REMOVAL PRODUCTS OFF THE SHELF THEY CONTAIN TOO MUCH SOAP AND WILL DAMAGE YOUR FABRIC WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS!!!!

It's too late for this now, but my husband swears that the best way to treat red wine spills is simply to pour white wine over them immediately. I've seen him do it twice, and it worked a treat both times (but beware horrified onlookers, especially if at a party!).
