How do you get motivated?

It’s a spare bedroom so just close the door and ignore it but it’s horrendous. I don’t know where to start and have 0 motivation for it. Literally none. 🙈

im assuming you’re talking about clutter. Can you tell us more about what sort of clutter?

you could just take in two carrier bags - one for charity shop stuff, one for rubbish / recycling and set a timer for ten minutes to see how much you can do. Then close the door and come back to it tomorrow.

It’s clutter yep. Lots of clean washing, loads of dp’s stuff that I am not supposed to touch (but neither do they!!), gifts, some toys, craft supplies etc

I have found the only thing to do is to deliberately set aside a fixed period of time to go and tackle stuff. Make it 10 or 15 minutes. Have bin bags or boxes ready, put on a podcast or music and get on with it.

Having said that, I have an attic full of my parents’ stuff (they both died years ago) and things from my childhood which I need to sort out. It is the emotional effort, and not knowing what to do with things that is a barrier to me.

Make a list. It breaks down a big job into smaller ones.
Also watch YouTube. There are some brilliant time lapse deep cleans that are sure to motivate!

Take a before picture. Then put on a really good podcast, audiobook, or album. Set yourself tiny goals (e.g. sort everything from one square in the corner, or sort every item of a certain type), and then celebrate each achievement. Make sure that you directly put stuff away/ in recyling/ charity shop bag rather than just moving it to a different pile.

Alternatively, invite someone to come stay for the weekend in the spare bedroom. 😁

BLT24 · 21/08/2023 11:15

Make a list of the order you are going to tackle it in. Put a timer on for 15 minutes and work through the list. Listen to your favourite music whisky doing it. Once the timer goes off keep going if you can. If not leave it for the next day. Repeat.

ManchesterGirl2 · 21/08/2023 11:15

For DP's stuff I would give them a deadline to sort it, and if not put it all in a big box.

BLT24 · 21/08/2023 11:16

*whilst doing it not whisky! Although you could have a glass of whisky (or your favourite drink whilst doing it!

Book a tip run. Get your partner to pitch in with you for 20 mins. Reward yourselves with pizza.
