How to make house smell lovely

Anyone got tips on how to make your house smell nice - preferably without using artificial smelling air fresheners or scented candles? You know when you go into someone’s house and it just smells really lovely? I want that!

Our house is clean, I try to open windows etc, etc. But I want it to smell good each time I walk in and I don’t know how.

I recently visited a friend's home and was really impressed with the lovely smell, so I made 4 reed diffusers with tiny bottles and a packet of reeds, 2 for upstairs, 2 for downstairs. Since then I've kept these topped up with a 'fresh linen' scent refill and I've had lots of compliments that the house smells nice and clean.

Don’t fall for the “buy Neom” posts, I did and I feel scammed 😆 my 5.99 gingerbread candle smelled nicer.

Some really helpful tips here, thank you everyone. I’m pretty sure it’s not a cleanliness issue - we have an excellent cleaner who comes twice a week (we’re not lazy, just unbelievably busy) and she does all the cleaning tasks outlined by pp - except the fabric washing, which I am doing right now!

Will look into diffusers and incense and changing the washing powder.

I fill little mesh bags with laundry scent boosters and put them behind radiators. I do this in the car which works well.

Cleaning the carpets and all drain/plugs makes a huge difference too
