Husband’s tops smell worse after washing

Hello everyone,

I’m hoping that someone here might be able to give advice as I’m not sure how I would even construct a Google search for this!

Every time I do laundry and hang it up indoors (we have no outdoor space - London flat!) the room stinks of sweat afterwards. Today we figured out that it is my husband’s t-shirts which are causing the sweaty smell. I wash them together with some of my clothes, but my clothes don’t smell after washing, while his do. The smell is like his body odour when it’s really bad, but he doesn’t often get much body odour, so I’m not sure why it would be so strong after washing. His t-shirts also don’t smell this way after wearing but before washing - it’s like washing them brings it out.

I obviously can’t just not wash them, so does anyone have any recommendations of what to do?

Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I need to clarify! Thank you for reading and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Put vinegar on the armpits, wash using bio powder or sports wash, run them all through a wash at 60 or higher.

They are ruined now by the smell, so if a 60 degree wash ruins them you're no worse off.

It's a myth that longer washes use more electricity - they actually use less than shorter ones because they use less water (more soaking).

Agree with everyone saying to ditch the fabric conditioner. Spray armpits/necks with vinegar and also switch to powder. Everytime I decide to wash using pods or liquid detergent I find the washing very quickly starts to smell. Powder makes a huge difference. I'll sometimes add a scoop of bicarbonate of soda in there as well which also freshens and brightens things up really well. 😀

Soak in Napisan before washing

Definitely switch to powder. And I use some Dettol laundry disinfectant mixed in with softener - best of both worlds!

Try vinegar instead of fabric softener.

This, white vinegar is great for getting rid of smells I schoosh some In the drum onto the clothes if they are particularly sweaty it's also good for pet smells. Op I'd ditch the pods and go back to washing powder if I were you.

Another vote for Halo Sports Wash - you can get it in sainsburys. It’s magic.
