Hello,

So this is the 2nd rug this year, we tried to clean the first rug after cat pissed on it but as it was an old one anyway it was replaced. She's done it again on the new one, we roll it up at night and when we go out but one night forgot to..

Ive soaked it in distilled vinegar and baking soda it's been drying since yesterday morning it's still damp I should but a hairdryer on it but haven't got one, there is faint cat piss smell but reeks of vinegar will this go when it's completely dry? Any other things I could try on it? If anyone has successfully managed to eradicate the smell from Thier carpet or rug pls send any tips! Thank you

You can buy pet pee spray stuff to spray on it. It has an enzyme that breaks something down in it.

I have no pets 😄, but I've read a lot of people mention this.

You need to use an enzyme cleaner designed for cat wee, eg Simple Solution.

I used bicarbonate of soda mixed with ground up cloves. Rubbed it into the (dry) offending area and left it for several days. Then hoovered it out. Smelt nicely of cloves but nothing else!

Hello @Yarnorama I forgot to add in the post that I've sprayed that on it also 😫

@MrsCat1 thank you! I'd be scared to try it I read it's toxic to cats 😣

It's possible that your cocktail of products isn't helping!

MrsCat1 · 02/08/2023 12:55

You could treat it away from the cat and then return the rug once the hoovering bit has taken place. My cat lives a long and happy life after that treatment and never peed on that rug again which was something of a miracle as he had probably done it 10 times before the treatment.

I've tried most things and have to say that I don't find Simple Solution particularly effective. On rugs bicarbonate and cloves worked and on my brand new (most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought ) wool coat I finally managed to get rid of the smell by spraying it with half a bottle of vodka!!!

Vinegar and baking soda don't dissolve the enzymes in cat urine. You'd need to wash the rug in a proper solution that does that or the cat will always smell the mark and pee there.

At a pinch, you could try scrubbing the area with diluted washing/laundry detergent and giving it a good rinse off with a hose or in the bath.

Also - cats peeing outside a litter box is not normal. You may want to get him/her checked at vet in case there is an underlying cause. Invest in a Feliway diffuser as well in case it is stress.
