Just exactly as the title says, I have slugs in my kitchen at night and it's freaking me out. I hate slugs so much. What is the best way to deal with the problem?

I feel your pain, my friend.

And the size of some! Eurgh.

My kitchen is very old and has gaps the buggers seem to get through, no matter how often I try blocking them up. Or sprinkling rosemary essential oil around.

They're apparently most attracted to yeasty smells, hence the old beer trap method. However, alongside disliking them intensely, I'm can't bring myself to contemplate drowning them (or salting them).

A smear of marmite on an old bread crust, left in a shallow cardboard box lures them out and then I chuck any collected back outside in the morning. Furthest end of garden. Hoping the birds sort them instead.

Have just read that they love citrus fruits!

Hollowed-out lemon/orange/grapefruit halves work as traps. Nice and damp.

May give that a go tonight. And back out to the garden they'll be taken in the morning.

I taped up the holes I thought they were getting through. Then put salt all around the area. For a few weeks I got the odd dead one, but it's been a few years slug free now.

How are they getting in?

Have you checked all the pointing of the brickwork of the outside walls, especially below the damp course? Replaced any crumbled mortar?
If they are coming in through an air brick, pour a thick layer of salt into the gaps. That should keep them out.

@JamaicanRumWinsEveryTime Thank you. I can't bear the idea of having to lure them in to trap them, as I think I actually have a phobia, but maybe that's what I have to do.

@namechange1986 Thank you. I think I'll have a go at taping up some holes. My kitchen is quite old, so I imagine there will be many.

I actually bought some copper tape, as I heard they don't like that, so I think I'm going to put that down and hope that it repels them. I hate them so much. If I see them at night, they make me jump and I get all wigged out but them! lol..

They are not a pleasant find in the middle of the night. We could easily have 8 or 9 every night. Especially bad if you aren't wearing shoes and it's dark...

It was the bottom of a patio door they were getting in.

We have the same problem and would love a solution. Our house is old so loads of gaps so would be impossible to tape them all, I’m reluctant to use salt as that just makes them explode and make a mess! Urgh I wish I knew the answer

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/08/2023 23:07

Do you have a leak somewhere?
We had a leak on the water supply pipe underneath the house, just below the stop tap. There was a tiny hole in the floorboards in the cupboard under the stairs where the stop tap was located. We repaired the leak and never saw another one.

I had slugs in the middles of the night in my kitchen where I used to live . Huge tiger type things. I hate slugs with a passion they actually are disgusting and pointless. I got so pissed off when I had a diabetic hypo one night and they were there! I got the silicone seal out at 2:30 am and went round my doorstep . Didn’t have them after that… seal gaps !
