Decluttering Thread 5 - Slowly Does It

We filled the previous thread quickly! I'm still in the middle of my annual leave and working through my old sentimental items so I need to keep the momentum going! It's taking ages.

Pigtailsandall · 24/09/2023 10:23

@Gassylady whenever I rummage around the house I'm certain to find:
Calpol/nurofen syringe or spoon
Bubble wand
Unidentified plastic toy, usually broken
Plastic wrapping and cardboard boxes from deliveries
Holey socks

Standard!

incessantnamechanger did your dds shorts turn up? I have not found my earbuds wire but I discovered I can charge them on dd2s Samsung phone charger so there is less urgency to find it. I have turned my bedroom and kitchen upside down looking for the charging wire which is probably a good thing as both are a lot tidier now. It sounds like you are doing so well with your dcs clothes, once you can see everything it should become easier to make buying and clearing out clothes a bit more routine. Dd1 only has about 6 t shirts now and a few hoodies and has such a lovely empty wardrobe - although she seems to have hundred socks again even though I don’t recall buying them. Can socks reproduce?

I have just got out the Bag of Crap from bedore dc broke up from before the summer holidays. I’m intending to start carrying it around with me again putting in every item in the wrong place. I remembered it as it has an old broken tablet so I am going to put that in a bag with two old routers and wires to take to Curry’s. Our nearest curry’s isn’t that close but it’s on an estate with McDonald’s so I’ll take dc there after school on Friday as a treat and take the routers, wires and tablet to curry’s.

I could try to turn the waist bands over good idea! My laptop died so that's a very sad out. I'm going to take photos of some of my clothes I ne er wear in a minute. It's more of a pita as people ask for measurements so I need to find a tape measure really

Pigtailsandall · 24/09/2023 19:04

Outs today:
11 baby books just collected
Managed to pawn off the tote bag they were in too!
2 bags of lentils to the food bank collection. We had so many lentils. I don't understand how.
A box of tea with few teabags left that no one likes

1615 in total now

Question: do you all put knickers in the bin or textile recycling? I feel a bit iffy about putting them in fabric recycling, but maybe I'm just being prudish. I doubt the rag collectors separate them much!

stealthninjamum · 24/09/2023 19:17

pigtailsandall this is awful but I tend to throw them away these days. When dc were younger I’d give them to school for other kids who have accidents but now throw them all away, I don’t like people sorting through my smalls and so I can’t imagine my dc would either.

I have a lot of lentils and pulses too. I have a friend who used to invite me over for the most amazing daal so I’d buy lentils but never make daal. Maybe I’ll do that next week.

Decafflatteplease · 24/09/2023 20:14

Busy decluttering weekend here.

Did some baking with some random one year out of date chocolate I found in the cupboard so a "free" pudding tonight using up what we had

A whole boot load and I mean a full boot load of stuff to the baby bank, had to push it down so I could see out of the back window!

1 item sold on vinted.... every little helps!

2 bags of clothes given to a friend with a child younger than mine.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/09/2023 21:05

8 more eBay sales posted
11 DVDs and a CD out
3 random items out
1 bookcase sold and collected

Total now 923.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 24/09/2023 21:14

Home from visiting brother, did manage to give away the gift bag and 2 x rugby tops.
He gave me an old running watch to try out as mine keeps dying, so win some, lose some.

Both my brothers have said I can bin our mums diaries, just need my sister to agree too. She kept a daily diary from 1959-2002. Then just stopped. Nothing earth shattering in them as I binge read them after she died. Just clutter now.

Hoping to get back into areas of doom tomorrow.

IndianSummer78 · 25/09/2023 04:05

I'm going to have to go down to one item a day soon, I've done all the easiest wins. Nothing out today so total is still 1187

heartbroken22 · 25/09/2023 09:21

@IncessantNameChanger thank you so much ♥️ you're right I notice clothes also deteriorate with time even when storing.

@Realfastfoodie thank you ♥️ I know what you mean baby is nearly 3 months it's gone so quick.

@stealthninjamum I totally agree. Thank you ♥️ my parents I have to regularly declutter for them. Even my kids toys will end up just shoved in a box somewhere. I feel sad but no way will I let them happen with my grandkids. I will ignore DH because he can't complain about mess if he doesn't help declutter it.

EllieQ · 25/09/2023 10:38

More school uniform decluttering yesterday - two dresses, two pairs culottes, and five polo shirts all to the charity bag. I need to check if the school is accepting school uniform donations.

heartbroken22 · 25/09/2023 11:14

Out today

A scarf I wear on the school run. It's gone bobbly and I have other scarves. Not sure why I always pick out the most worn out stuff to wear out more.

Dd6 wore some tights today and they look like they'll rip any second.

A brand vest that belongs to dd2. She hardly wears vests as she gets too hot. Only in the summer when she's in the house.

3 x leggings aged 2-3
2 t shirts aged 2-3
2 shorts aged 2-3
1 sweatshirt dress aged 18 months- 24 months

Dd2 is sat here drawing on her pants which makes me think I need to save the above but no she has others. Also heatwave coming up so maybe I should keep the shorts? But they're well worn and again she has others.

stealthninjamum · 25/09/2023 12:22

@heartbroken22 I’m glad you’re ignoring your dh. I just think if there’s an easy way to simplify your life you should do it until you get to maintenance levels of decluttering and have more time.

I have found my earbuds wire under a letter so today’s job is to shred post and do some filing.I have a bag of electronics to go into the car to go to Currys.

I’ve also had someone just collect a toy there bought from Facebook marketplace.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/09/2023 17:02

Dh was off today after his epic 20 hour day kast week.

Got rid of bags of rubbish from our room. Bag of old bedding.

37 items of clothing to donate

I have sorted out lots of my clothing to either sell on Vinted or donate. Lots of it is really lovely stuff but I need to get rid of vast quantities still. So I can't possibly sell it all and have a tidy house. Harsh but true. I'm still getting of things on Vinted so I will keep uploading things.

Went through ds clothes today and decided to keep lots for dd. I doubt she will ever wear them. Got to be really brave and just donate quite a lot now lots clothes o really love but they don't fit my lifestyle. I won't wear them sadly

Vinorosso74 · 25/09/2023 17:41

I've still being going with one out a day. More than one is a bonus! Today was a Vinted sale sent off, never had as many favourites on a item. Another out was the post bag if that counts?!

LivingInaBuildingSite · 25/09/2023 19:47

Definitely count the postbag, esp if you’re like me and have a stash of them for ‘just in case’!

@IncessantNameChanger - so glad you found the charging wire, was bugging me lol!

I have spent a while going through 3 huge photo albums from my mum and binned all the scenery shots, photos of her friends I never knew, blurry duplicates, etc. = several inches worth out!
quite a few more albums to go, then I might see if I can reduce the number of albums, not convinced I can though.

Have done household jobs otherwise so not a huge Decluttering day.

Did drop off a forgotten hoodie for a friends dc that has been loitering in the car for ages.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/09/2023 20:43

6 sold on Vinted. Things I liked really but never mind, no room for everything

147 out so far this month

IndianSummer78 · 25/09/2023 20:57

Tackled some paperwork tonight. Out went:

64 obsolete documents
5 magazines
2 card dividers
1 old sleep eye mask

Total is 1259

Realfastfoodie · 25/09/2023 22:13

Well done everyone! Our new little one made an appearance a few weeks early over the weekend. All ok here!

No decluttering happening but I’m feeling the benefit of previous efforts as we weren’t ready but can definitely find her stuff.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/09/2023 23:30

Congratulations @Realfastfoodie oh I miss the baby days

IndianSummer78 · 26/09/2023 00:16

Aww congratulations on your new arrival 👣👶 RealFastFoodie

Pigtailsandall · 26/09/2023 08:13

Congratulations @Realfastfoodie , that's lovely news!

OP posts:
Pigtailsandall · 26/09/2023 11:24

Not much decluttering. I'm feeling quite sleepy and somber, I feel like the change in seasons has made me want to hibernate and not do much. I shredded 2 sets of documents today, relating to old issues that have been dealt with, and recycled a plastic storage pouch that was broken.

Total is 1618.
