Decluttering Thread 5 - Slowly Does It

Pigtailsandall · 29/07/2023 12:41

We filled the previous thread quickly! I'm still in the middle of my annual leave and working through my old sentimental items so I need to keep the momentum going! It's taking ages.

I think temporary boxes are a really good idea @stealthninjamum. Then I can’t get myself in a state about perfection.

stealthninjamum · 29/08/2023 16:32

@Realfastfoodie it was one of those quick wins where I seriously don’t know why I didn’t do it before. It also enabled me to do ‘A Slob Comes Clean’s’ container approach where you only put stuff in the space you have, and then you can throw stuff away if it doesn’t fit.

Realfastfoodie · 29/08/2023 16:49

Right, I know it’s buying stuff but I’m buying a couple of those boxes from the works. I’ve checked they are bigger than a4, so pictures etc will go. In the meantime I’m going to try to clear a few bits in prep for the boxes.

Realfastfoodie · 29/08/2023 16:49

Thanks for the encouragement @stealthninjamum! I needed that

renomeno · 29/08/2023 17:05

Thank you @Realfastfoodie !

@stealthninjamum I just watched her video on the container concept as I cleared away the last of the holiday stuff, makes perfect sense and I'm going to try and apply in a few 'problem' areas.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 29/08/2023 17:27

I've been away on holiday which was lovely BUT before we left my partner couldn't find his passport, so there is paperwork and boxes EVERYWHERE now where he threw everything around trying to find it. I've told him if he dares put it back in a random box and not in the document holder I will End Him.

One item sold on Vinted posted today.

Realfastfoodie · 29/08/2023 18:04

Cross your fingers for me guys, I have three things being picked up this evening and hoping everyone turns up. One bit of furniture which has followed me round since university. I like it, but I can’t find a place for it which works. One bit of tech. One headboard that won’t go into the loft with the only bed it fits!

It’s nearly a year since we moved in, it’s time for them to go.

Realfastfoodie · 29/08/2023 20:23

urgh.

1 collection
1 turned up but can’t fit it in the car, hopefully coming back tomorrow 🤷‍♀️
1 didn’t bother coming or telling me she wasn’t coming

Realfastfoodie · 29/08/2023 20:28

I am currently sympathising with team “just hire a skip and have done” 😞

Gassylady · 29/08/2023 20:35

Lots of new uniform in in preparation for the return to school. But lots of outs in the form of pants and socks that were very worn. Old paperwork pile shredded. Very satisfyingly an old rotten structure in the garden demolished at the weekend, has filled a skip effortlessly. Next item on the demo list will have to wait until skip can be changed - may keep for October half term. OH busy planning the veg plot to replace these

Gassylady · 29/08/2023 20:36

I always recommend Dana White “slob comes clean” I love the container concept it just makes so much sense

Pigtailsandall · 29/08/2023 21:58

We are on holidays this week so not much decluttering, but I just wanted to say I'm so amazed at home much headway people are making! I feel like these threads really egg you on and keep you accountable. I also have a very disorganized memory box so I want to upgrade it to a better one. DCs artwork and papers are in two folders but I need a better long-term solution.

All I got rid of this week was an uncomfortable pair of knickers and 2 skincare samples. Total is 1443

@Pigtailsandall - thank you so much for this thread, it’s helped me a lot!! ❤️

Realfastfoodie · 30/08/2023 08:25

So, after that pep talk about memory boxes and it being a quick win, I’ve gone for a big push with my shelves where birthday cards and my little one’s art was getting piled up. I’ve got a very temporary Amazon cardboard box to keep the nicest bits (probably still too many, will need to apply container theory!). Thanks @stealthninjamum!

So along with the one pick-up that was actually collected yesterday and some things I’m sending to nursery, that’s a big step in the right direction! It was also very visible clutter so it helps quite a lot more than other spaces.

1 cube storage
12 books to nursery
71 - shelves declutter/cards/ kids art pile and potential memory box sort

266 total for august
1107 total

Thanks again everyone and especially @Pigtailsandall for the thread. Keep your inspiration and tips coming please. 😊

IncessantNameChanger · 30/08/2023 10:45

My Wilko 😪🤧 have the A4 boxes reduced right now. Popped I yesterday for a vase.

tallsmallmum · 30/08/2023 14:09

well I messaged the potential uniform buyer this morning to confirm her coming but it's sitting there unread, I've a notion she's avoiding me 😖 hope I can tell you I was wrong later 🫠

Realfastfoodie · 30/08/2023 15:56

Good luck @tallsmallmum - hope she gets back to you. My “can’t fit it in the car” man came back with a van today. So some people do what they say. Admittedly he was getting an absolute bargain.

I’m feeling a bit more inspired again. Don’t have much time and the house is still in chaos but it will get better with each week (I hope).

Vinorosso74 · 30/08/2023 18:32

Had quite a successful week! Someone has just been to collect an item I had for sale.
DD sorted through her toys and stationery (she's 13 so toys not wanted tho Lego has been broken and some rebuilt) and we've got everything into one lot of storage drawers so sold the empty set at the weekend. A lot of outs from the drawers, some gone into rubbish and recycling, others to sell/Freecycle/charity shop which I need to look through but it's progress.

tallsmallmum · 30/08/2023 19:07

I wasn't wrong- she finally replied just now and said everything is too big. you knew what shagging sizes they were the whole time 🤦🏽‍♀️

Realfastfoodie · 30/08/2023 19:23

Ffs @tallsmallmum - sorry, people can be so frustrating and thoughtless!

Well done @Vinorosso74!!

My last thing got collected today (I gave the no show one more chance). And I had an unexpected extra declutter victory but I can count it. Our cleaner very kindly emptied all the bins including one I had filled up with decluttering stuff that I hadn’t counted. But I’m going to call it 5 things as I can definitely remember more than that just from my son’s room (old tatty boxes etc). I hope there wasn’t anything I needed to do something special with though 🤦‍♀️

IncessantNameChanger · 30/08/2023 20:19

I caved and went to the charity shop ( buying - not donating!) Got dd five lovely things for £1 each, nice bits from Zara and H&M. It's all only £1 in the lovely charity shop. I live in quite a posh town so nice stuff. I will justify it because if its £1 then there's no reason to not let it go when outgrown.

I'm into summer holiday burn out now. Love my kids and love them being off school but omg, enough of the constant bickering

declutteringonedayatatime · 30/08/2023 20:47

I am decluttering by posting my Ebay and Facebook sales. I am glad to get rid.

It has been great to see how everyone is progressing.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/08/2023 22:41

Nothing to count out but threw lots of out of date baby food yesterday and a few really out of date tins. Also lots of crisps from 2022 🫣.

Chipped one of my nice cups but my DP won't let me throw it, says he's taking it to work 🙄.

We had a quick look around a car boot sale today to see if it was worth getting a pitch in a few weeks time. It was heaving with people so we might go for it if we have the time around work.

IndianSummer78 · 31/08/2023 00:52

One tape dispenser. I like this place, no plans to move for the foreseeable future and I'm done with selling stuff so no parcels to wrap. Face it to a friend who is moving soon

One long cardigan that isn't particularly soft, I like soft things and have plenty

One t-shirt that's about 15yrs old and starting to not look so good

Total is 1168 ? I'll go check

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 31/08/2023 07:50

Yesterday I chucked:

2 kids books
1 magazine
1 magic water paint pad

Slow progress! My count is now 90.

Does everyone have some kind of goal that they're working towards? I'm not sure what is a realistic target for me...
