We have guests coming to stay and I'm having a good clean around. What can I put on the carpet (without cleaning it) to get rid of the awful dog smell? Even the hoover stinks!

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over it and leave it to work then vacuum it up.
Maybe a bit of essential oil in a diffuser or oil burner would help?
Clean all the filters of your vacuum first as well, they get clogged up with dog hair which then radiates smell in the warmth of the vacuum.

Everything that @thenewaveragebear1983 said is good. I also add a tissue with some drops of favourite essential oils to the hoover bag or cylinder - bergamot or lavender are favourites of mine . It doesn’t have a long lasting effect but the vacuum will smell better and it will scent the air as it works.
