it seems to be coming from the door catch. There's nothing burned inside and it seemed to wash everything OK.

Any ideas?

Keep a careful eye on it - it has just been on local radio that a family is homeless thanks to a fire in their dishwasher which totally gutted the ground floor and smoke damaged the upper floor!

(is your name a clue to something that happened in your kitchen as well? )

I have turned it of and I'll leave it empty today and see what DH thinks alater. It's a strange smell - not had that one before!

is it slightly nutty - think poppadoms (sp?)frying in ground nut oil? If so I think it is probably the electrics frying in some way - don't switch it on!

Tommy - yes I have the distinction of having had flames emerging from my toaster Hope you get your dishwasher sorted - certainly keep it unplugged in the meantime.

not really getting poppadoms to be honest northernlurker - more like a metallic burning smell.

The thing is on its last legs anyway - this may be the time to go shopping for a new one

I don't know where the plug is - it is built in. The electrics bit wouldn't be in the door though would they?

(sorry to sound a bit dim - the dishwasher is usually DH's domain )

The poppadoms smell is what our computer did right before it blew up in a (small) puff of smoke. I had actually just been into the kitchen to see what dh was cooking!
