Raw chicken sponges

I always think of this but never know if I’m being stupid or not.

If I use a dish sponge to clean items I’ve used for raw poultry (chopping board, knives etc) I then bin it. Often bits of stringy chicken get stuck to the fibres of the scoured and I could never then use that on our cups etc!

I know in theory the washing up liquid should kill bacteria but 👀

Because of this, I end up binning a sponge every other day.

Well, it’s certainly interesting to read everyone’s different techniques!

I would keep a designated “disgusting” sponge but I don’t trust DP to remember.

Might go with the Milton overnight idea.

We use a cloth. Gets put in the wash after it's used.

I just cut it all up with scissors straight from the pack, holding the breast / thigh pieces in my hand and snipping into the pan. I thought everyone did this? 😄
if it’s a whole chicken obvs not but i’d just be roasting that obvs.

Yes this is what I do!

Reduce any raw chicken contamination as much as I can then put anything that does need cleaning in the sink and wash with fairy and hot water (not in the bowl).

I'll say it, no wonder the planet is fucked.

Amen

You can put sponges through the washing machine and they last ages. Or get silicone reusable ones you put in the dishwasher.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/06/2023 09:58

If you are putting the cleaning items in the dishwasher, why don't you just put the chicken-y items in the dishwasher to clean them (wooden boards aside)?

Do the same but on an old plate which along with scissors goes in washing up.

Use a dishcloth and bleach after every use. Dishwasher and non wooden plastic cutting board is better

SixOClock · 06/06/2023 18:34

I keep my cloths and brushes in bleach solution. I don't see the point in wiping down kitchen with cloth with old food particles.
