Do you leave your washing machine door open between uses?

I've just seen something about this on another thread...

I never leave my washer door open, nor did my Mam so I've just never seen it be done. But it seems that no matter how after I run my washer on a cleaning cycle, or clean the seal etc it just never smells great, and lately my clothes are sometimes stinky when they come it too.

Is this why?!

Do you clean the washing machine?

I find it needs an air out sometimes, probably every couple of uses I leave it open out of habit, and clean the seals / run a cleaning cycle maybe once a month? It doesn't smell!

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2023 14:23

Yes. I rarely clean it though. No smell.

LadyDanburysHat · 23/05/2023 14:24

I leave it open until it's completely dry, then I close it. I also use washing machine cleaner every few months

peachespeachespeaches · 23/05/2023 14:24

Yes, it smells otherwise.

catchthedog · 23/05/2023 14:25

yes it's always open, but it's in the garage so isn't untidy or in the way.

Swifey40 · 23/05/2023 14:25

Yes, always leave it open otherwise it stinks!

hopefulsquirrel · 23/05/2023 14:25

Apparently you should leave the drawer open too!

ZillionDayStreak · 23/05/2023 14:26

Yes. I leave door open and drawer open.

And every so often it gets a wipe of the seal with cheap white vinegar, and a boil wash with the rest of the bottle.

Keeps it non smelly and deals with the limescale.

TokyoSushi · 23/05/2023 14:27

Yes for a couple of hours after each wash, it's in the utility though so doesn't really matter. No smell and I don't pay that much attention to cleaning it!

dementedpixie · 23/05/2023 14:27

I leave it slightly ajar
I also use powder and run a maintenance wash every so often (the machine tells me when to do a drum cleaning wash)

heatdeath · 23/05/2023 14:27

Always & the drawer.

User1529865 · 23/05/2023 14:28

Yes I always do, it annoys me when DH shuts it

CadburyDream · 23/05/2023 14:28

Yes it’s always open unless it’s being used!

SweetPetrichor · 23/05/2023 14:29

Yeah, our door and drawer are always open unless it’s in use.

hopefulsquirrel · 23/05/2023 14:30

WPro is good for a maintenance wash - it’s the only thing that has stopped our machine smelling

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/05/2023 14:30

Yes.

Running a boil wash should get rid of the smell.

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 23/05/2023 14:30

I leave the door slightly open, and I wipe around the door and seal.

SummerBaby23 · 23/05/2023 14:30

Yes the drawer and drawer always open and I clean it every so often by wiping the drawer and door seal and running a dishwasher tablet through it on a very hot wash.

SummerBaby23 · 23/05/2023 14:31

Door and drawer *

SirChenjins · 23/05/2023 14:31

Yes I do - and clean it every couple of months

RobertsRadio · 23/05/2023 14:32

Yes I always leave the door wide open in between washes and my machine never smells.

Partytastic · 23/05/2023 14:34

Occasionally. Are you regularly doing at least one 60c wash?

Theraffarian · 23/05/2023 14:34

Always slightly ajar , I’ve never shut it , never smells but assume it would if I trapped old water in it maybe.

user1498572889 · 23/05/2023 14:36

Yes i leave the door open and i take the soap drawer out. Using liquid detergent on low temp washes for a long time causes bacteria to grow and this is what smells. Do a regular 90 deg wash with bio powder. This will kill the bacteria.

andymary · 23/05/2023 14:40

Yes, I always leave the door open fully for a few hours after doing a wash, then I leave it slightly ajar until the next use, so it's never closed unless in use.

The other thing is to never leave dirty washing inside the drum whilst waiting to fill it up to a full load, as anything wet in there like towels and tea towels just start to smell real quick in the confined space.

I also do a hot wash with a limescale solution once every 3 months.
