Enamel bath has lost its sheen. How can I get it back?

I use Method every day, have used Cif and now bought HG.

None of them work. The enamel is dull. Around the edges it's still shiny but in the main bit of the bath it's dull as though it should be a matt finish, but it's not, it should be shiny.

Any tips? Bath is enamel, not fibreglass, so can't use acidic stuff on it.

You can get them re-enamelled - i had an old cast iron bath done a few years ago.

it's dull because enamel wears away from acidic (anti limescale) cleaners.

only way is to get the bath re-enameled ir painted.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/05/2023 12:26

It depends on the reason for dullness. In my case I was under- cleaning (okay I was practically never actually cleaning the bath. I just rinsed it down) so it was dull from limescale and general grime. I cleaned it last week with CIF bathroom foam, and now it sparkles like diamonds.

If you have worn away the enamel from too much cleaning obviously that won't work. Re-enamelling probably costs more than a new bath, if you really can't live wit it, which is what I would do.

gogogoji · 15/05/2023 12:36

Pretty sure the only way is to re-enamel the bath. No amount of scouring is going to make it shiny. It's only going ti make it worse

justasking111 · 15/05/2023 12:39

You're over cleaning get it enamelled and dial back on the cleaning once a week is more than enough. Avoid CIF. I had to use it today because my back went so bath hadn't been cleaned in five weeks. It survived

I actually feel vindicated in my slovenliness. My bath is twenty something years old and good as new.

ScreamingBeans · 15/05/2023 18:13

I can't believe it's being over cleaned. I clean it every day (almost every time I have a shower) but my kids hardly ever clean it.

I might try that cif mousse

I'm intrigued, what is a "shower tray with pedestal"? Even Google doesn't really clarify.

Is it a polite way of offering to re-enamel your toilet?

ODFOx · 15/05/2023 20:15

Have you read ' Diary of a Nobody'?

Don't paint it red.

ODFOx · 15/05/2023 20:16

Years ago we stripped the shine by standing the spin dryer in the bath: laundry detergent and enamel are not a good combination.

Surely it's those raised trays?

Like if you can't put the drain pipe under the floor you need to raise the tray up to make room.

Hi, if you have used abrasives and harsh chemicals, the enamel surface is probably gone. It would not be possible to do much else than resurfacing it. I do it professionally for quite a time now, and for those that have enamel baths - modern high acid content, bleach cleaners are not safe to use - I write about it here: https://eagerbeaver.org.uk/how-to-clean-enamel-bath/
as your bath is most likely too far gone, you have two options - using harsh chemicals to temporarily clean it or spending on resurfacing/replacement. My service details and price guide can be found here:

If I'm too far to travel to assist, you can drop me a message through a website to assist in any questions you may have. Peace! Tomasz.
