Soap taste on plastics after dishwashing

I've noticed a strong taste of soap on plastic/ silicone things I put through the dishwasher. DH says he can't taste soap but it's there.

I've cleaned the whole dishwasher, took out all the parts that could be removed and gave them a good clean. I then put it on it's longest cycle with a bowl with loads of vinegar in the bottom rack.

I can still taste soap. Any other ideas?

Same on silicon stuff. I just ignore it as it’s only mixing spoons and doesn’t affect taste of food (unless I lick directly off the spoon).

If you're able to air it out for a few hours or overnight the smell/taste lessens, doesn't completely go away though.

I find the lemon ones to be the worst. I dont taste it using my current stuff - Tesco own brand (not lemon!)

This annoys me as well. Can even taste it on food chopped on plastic chopping board. Only solution is to use fragrance - free tablets . Some big brands are better than others, fairy was the worst imo. Why do we need to perfume our dishes?!

Funnily enough over the past few weeks I have started tasting washing up liquid on my hand washed stuff.

I was wondering if it now contained new ingredients.

This is the reason why I don't put plastic through the dishwasher. It makes everything smell revolting, especially itself. I've never found a solution.

I hate this!

We have very soft water, and find that the very cheap dishwasher tablets - 40 for £2.50 type ones - actually work better and leave no taste.

pontipinemum · 07/05/2023 21:53

@NewLeafAgain that could be it. I always used the normal ones but switched to lemon. I'll switch back and see if it makes a difference.

I have a few silicone cooking things - like a microwave steamer. That's where I noticed the taste 1st. I probably should just wash that in the sink. But for the most part all things in my house go in the dishwasher!

I find this with some tablets but not others. Currently use ordinary ecover ones and don’t notice it with them.

greenlychee · 07/05/2023 21:54

hmm, we always use the super cheap lidl ones and don't have this problem at all. I even cut them in half (we have a small dishwasher) and they work fine no smell etc.

It was the lemon dishwasher tablets! I've done a few days with the normal ones and there is no taste off the plastic/ silicone things
