Stupid question?......

Sorry in advance for this undoubtedly stupid question!....What do you do with your guest beds when there are no sheets, pillowcases etc on them? I feel they are getting all dusty - do you cover yours with anything? I am wondering about getting some plain white sheets to drape over them? I don't really want to keep hoovering them.....

Not used to having guest beds as you can probably tell!.....

I haven't actually got any but if I did, I would leave them made up with a bedspread or throw over them. It would be a cold day in hell before I hoovered a bed. Is that a thing people do? 😱

dudsville · 22/04/2023 21:04

I used to keep the mattress bare but i didn't like the look so I keep it made now. The nice part about that is if I'm having a restless night i have somewhere to decamp to.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 22/04/2023 21:08

Oh, this is a question I'd meant to ask! If I make the bed after guests leave I end up having to was the sheets again of we don't have visitors for ages, which really annoys me. I've also been considering some sheets just to cover the bed but feel like I'm reverting to a period drama dust sheet look!

Why would you need to wash clean sheets again when they are already clean???

OP- Once the guest sheets are washed/dried, I just make the bed up again until the next guest. Also never occurred to be to vacuum the mattress!!!

catinthesunshine · 22/04/2023 21:13

Some of you evidently don’t have pets!!

Bleepbloopbluurp · 22/04/2023 21:14

I leave the guests sheets on and then change the bed for the next visitor.
Means nothing gets dusty and I don't have to do more washing than necessary.

AmandaHoldensLips · 22/04/2023 21:16

I always kept all the beds clean and made up and threw a throw over the top of the made bed to keep dust off. So there were always beds available should the need arise. If they weren't used for a while, I would just change the pillow cases when a guest arrived so it smelled extra fresh.

titchy · 22/04/2023 21:18

Just Chuck a throw on clean bedding - keeps cats (dust?! Really) off.

PriamFarrl · 22/04/2023 21:19

I put fresh sheets on then cover with a bed spread. Remove the bedspread and a quick airing before guests.

We have a dog but close the guest room door. Do you mean that you allow your pets to lounge and sleep on guests beds???

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/04/2023 21:24

I don't like to see a mattress with no bedding on, so I had the spare bed made with fresh bedlinen, and covered it with a bedspread as a kind of dustsheet, which I could remove the day before people arrived.

This sort of bedspread (mine was from Ikea though) https://www.next.co.uk/style/st391339/225630

Well it's usually made up but if not the duvet is a over it. And it's not ever that long before someone (usually my son) is over.

WooWooWinnie · 22/04/2023 21:30

Bed made up, throw over the top. Cat then sleeps on throw (because yes @CC4712 I’d rather the cat slept on a throw on the spare bed than on the duvet on my bed). Lint roll every now & again to get rid of the cat hair, remove throw when visitors come, wash throw every now & again.

JackiePlace · 22/04/2023 22:07

Stand the mattress up on its side and cover with a mattress protector.

JackiePlace · 22/04/2023 22:09

… or if you're at my Mum's house, cover the bed in newspaper and then in onions from the garden! 😆Sometimes with the odd cat thrown in for good measure.

mrsmacmc · 22/04/2023 22:23

Bed gets freshly made up and a throw put over it to stop the dust. If it's a while between guests bed get aired out before they arrive

Nellieinthebarn · 22/04/2023 22:25

I keep the beds made up, but DH snores, and I sometimes have nights where I don't sleep, so its nice to have somewhere to go.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 22/04/2023 22:38

No naked beds here, made up again after guests

mommybear1 · 22/04/2023 22:42

As my old Irish aunt used to say I always "dress the bed" after stripping it. Always handy if you have unexpected guest or (as in our case) your DC throws up and you strip your bed and tuck them into the spare quickly to save redressing your own bed 😂😂

KnickerlessParsons · 22/04/2023 23:37

Most of our guests are the same people all the time so I just leave the beds made up until they've been used enough to need washing.

Our house is old and if it's been a few months then the sheets seem to smell a bit grim - believe me, I'm not houseproud or a neat freak, but I do notice this. I think it's the slight damp in the house even if the windows are opened regularly, plus the dust.

Kittycash · 23/04/2023 07:55

We live in an old, converted barn and get a lot of dust and insects in the spare room.
I leave a thin topper on the bed and wash it when guests are due.

SorePaw · 23/04/2023 07:59

I strip the bed down to the mattress protector, air the room & bed for a couple of days then remake the bed with fresh bedding. Then put a light throw over it which I wash ready for next time.

Fairislefandango · 23/04/2023 08:03

I leave the mattress bare. Don't really understand the 'I don't like to seea bare mattress' comments tbh. It's just a mattress. Shut the door and you don't have to look at it! We have pets, but we shut the door.
