Any idea what this item is please? It has Chinese wiring on the bottom. The cup part fits over the top of the base, like a lid.

It can't be a butter bell. For it to be a butter bell it would have to be the other way up, and the decorated part would have to be the bottom. But the part which would be the base is curved, so it would not be able to stand.

I thought it might be an old match 'box', but it lacks a striking surface. My parents have something similar, but the porcelain is ridged so that an old (non-safety) match could be struck on it.

it's probably modern. not sure what the size is but it would make for a nice covered toothbrush holder, or hide away for tampons.
no clue what the original purpose is though.
