Earthy smell from kitchen sink

Hi all

Need some help with a mystery smell from out kitchen sink.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed a very ‘earthy’ type smell coming from the plug hold, but it gets a lot worse when water goes down it. The smell has gotten steadily worse, so now downstairs smells noticeably earthy too.

We’ve put 3 lots of drain cleaner in (2 lots of sink unblocked and a foaming one to remove odour). Nothing seems to be doing anything and the water drains just fine, so not sure what to try next beyond maybe call a plumber?

Try a plunger on it. Also make sure its not the overflow pipe that is smelling.

Best bet after that is take the U bend off (its not difficult) and clean it. It can only be between the U bend and plug and the overflow pipe. As the smell is worse when you're emptying the sink, I guess its the overflow pipe that is full of garbage.

You are a lifesaver! We took the overflow pipe out and it was really in need of a clean! There’s no longer a smell coming from the sink when we run the water now. Going to have a proper sniff around tomorrow when we wake up and come downstairs (to rule out us having gone noseblind in the meantime). So pleased!!
