Silicone cookware

Recently made some cakes which required baking at a higher temperature than I usually use.
When I took them out of the tray (one with 12 compartments), I noticed the silicone was discoloured. I thought initially that this was from a little overspill, but having got that off and put the trays through the dishwasher twice, they are still discoloured.
Is there anything I can do to get them looking a bit less grotty? I've already tried a little gentle scouring on the corner and using 'pink stuff' with no success.

Is it a stain, or does the tray look burnt?

GimmeBiscuits · 07/02/2023 19:05

It seems to be staining.

We have some silicone baking mats & they've discoloured through use - doesn't affect them/the food, just looks not as nice. As long as the silicone isn't damaged it should be fine.

You could try a weak bleach solution.

I think I'd be worried about damaging the silicon but I guess if it was weak enough it would work :)
I tried to upload a photo but my phone isn't cooperating at the moment.

Don't you find the silicone absorbs the smell of the dishwasher and then gives your baking that soapy plastic taste? I've binned all mine for that reason, and because when I made chocolate cakes they stained like yours have.

GimmeBiscuits · 07/02/2023 22:48

wibble interesting! No I haven't found any issue with smell but I did make muffins with cinnamon and turmeric in which possibly could have caused the stains, although they were in muffin cases in the tray.

It's probably the turmeric

You could try a soak in Milton. Otherwise I would leave it our in the sunshine which fades stains on clothes and Tupperware type containers.

might have a bit of a wait for sunny weather though.

I have some Milton which I was going to try on pillowcases so I can give that a go and report back!
