We had this problem last year - massive slow, sleepy flies. I think they hibernated in the wall cavities and then when we started turning on the heating more they woke up and were flying out of small gaps by radiator pipes etc (old house). Stuffing newspaper in the gaps and just patiently nudging them out of windows eventually seemed to get rid of them.

We had this problem once when a mouse died under the floorboards. There was quite a stink and I guess the flies were drawn to it. It passed after about 5 days. 🤢

I think they are cluster flies. They sort of hibernate in big groups in pipes, dark leafy areas, then wake up when it's warmer and fly away. Although they feel a bit gross they aren't like bluebottles in their eating habits(!) think more leaf mold and will most likely head to a window and go out. It's probably easier not to block up any holes as they are already in there. I had them once round the I side of a window frame, but once I exposed them they flew out in a few minutes.

I also think it could be cluster flies. Do you live near farmland or fields?

We had this quite a few years ago, there was a dead bird in the chimney, it was awful, lots of flies, quite big and quite dopey, easy to swat.
