Hug Rug OR Turtle Mat

I've just thrown away yet another washable doormat because the backing had deteriorated from washing.

Been looking at these two types.

Do the backings last????

Has anyone had both & can compare the two?

Looking for 80cm wide and as long as possible, to fill the space in the back door into the utility room in an effort to contain the dog mud.

Hug rug have a 80 x 150 runner.
Turtle mat 75 x 120.

Neither are cheap, and if they last that's okay, but not if they fall apart after a few washes (probably wash weekly).

Oh, Turtle mat also have a larger runner 75 x 150, but only plain.

Which is the best Turtle mat backing, and would a 75 x 150 with the heavier backing go in a standard home washing machine?

Hug rug is a definite no from me - left loads of little bits of the backing in machine. I had it in a sunny spot under patio doors, and the rubber backing melted in places and stuck to tiles.

I have one of each in my utility, a small turtle and a large hug. I find the hug to be much better quality. It goes longer between washes and responds better to washing.

Chasingsquirrels · 22/11/2022 09:52

Thanks both - Polar posts!

Lolliesareonme It won't be in the sun at all in the utility, but I'll bear that in mind if I want one for the conservatory!

It's the backing coming off that I'm so fed up with.

LynneBenfield that's helpful to have a comparison, thanks.

I've got a large bath mat we were given as a wedding present 20+ years ago, and the backing on that is as good as new. Admittedly it wouldn't stop water going through as its woven - but that wouldn't matter.
I'd be tempted to repurpose it, but it fits the bathroom perfectly - and is cream, so is a bit of a no go for muddy paws.

I have looked at bath mats but not found another big enough, hence back to washable rugs.

Any other opinions?

Mine isn’t in a sunny spot, so I can’t comment on the sun-related perishing side of things. On the other hand, my turtle mat has a rubber border and a section of that (about 5cm long) parted company with the carpeted middle on the second wash. I washed/dried according to the label, so I don’t think it was that. It doesn’t affect the use of the mat itself but it didn’t fill me confidence when I’d spent £60ish on the thing!

I bought the Lakeland own version for my front door/vestibule/porch and it was the worst of the three, so don’t bother with that as an alternative!

I have both. All our hug rugs have been and are brilliant. Turtle mat lasted years and is now in our garage. I don’t wash our mats weekly, probably every 6-8 weeks depending. Backing all fine still and I wash low and tumble on low synthetic setting.

I have turtle mats and love them. They need washing quite frequently but that’s because they pick up a lot of dirt in high traffic areas.

one is in a sunny spot, has been for 5 years and while I think the colours are a bit faded no deterioration otherwise.

family members think I’m mad spending so much on doormats but they’ve lasted longer, are more effective and easily washed, so worth every penny imo.

Right, I've ordered a Hug Rug, will see how it lasts.
Thanks for all the replies.

Update: Hug Rug came in the week and is doing the job so far. The backing seems much like others I've had though, so time will tell as to how it stands up to regular washing.
I went for a 80x100 in the end as I saw one at a reasonable price and didn't want to splash out on a longer runner without knowing it wouldn't fall apart.

@Chasingsquirrels sorry I know this an oldish thread! Just wondered how your hug rug is holding up?
Am looking for a decent runner to help catch muddy paws before they get all over the house 😂
Thank You ☺️

It just so happened that I washed it yesterday. I've attached a picture I've just taken of the reverse - you can see that there has been some deterioration of the rubber backing around the edge, but it is a lot less than on previous mats I've had.

I would caveat this by saying that it hasn't been washed anywhere near as much as weekly.
Not long after I got the Hug Rug I also got a doormat from the Aldi specials, this has a harder rubber backing which on the front protrudes a couple of cm around the mat bit. It isn't machine washable, but the pile is very short and it vacuums well. I have hosed it down a couple of times in summer.

As a result the Hug Rug hasn't always been down, but the Aldi mat doesn't soak up wetness in the same way as the Hug Rug, so mostly I use both.

Would I get another one in preference to one of the generic "washable" mats I've had in the past - yes.

@Chasingsquirrels thank you so much! I've ordered two 😂
Not soooo bothered about the washing side of things (as long as it hoovers well), more that it helps absorb wet paws 😂

I buy washable rugs and have about 5 dotted about. Some are from Dunelm and the main living room rug is from Ruggable which I have two different choices of style of topper. Washable runner in hallway came from somewhere online but I can't remember where! Being able to wash rugs with two dogs is a game changer for me-I own a Newfoundland and a Labrador pup. Always shedding, always wet, always doggy smelling - but I wouldn't swap them for the world 😜
