FOUR floors! Poor boiler!

You def need a new one, Paula - it would save you money in the long run. Is there anywhere on the ground floor it could go, so it wouldn't have to work so hard in future?

That Vaillant website I linked to lets you put in your post code to give you a list of fitters local to you - I'd do that and get 2-3 of them in for a quote.

BnQ have some cheap insulation (we are doing our house with it atm)

that does seem astonomical though

new boiler might help (not cheap)...

My house is freezing and I've realised its at least partly because the radiators are not heating up in the middle, apparently they have sludge. Could that be your problem?

Better off with the boiler at the top of the house and a pressurised water system I think. No idea how much that is to install though. Luckily was here when we moved in. 4 floors including cellar, 6 bed - heating about £120 to £150 a month. Electricity about half that and I'm in all day (with the heat on).
