recommend me a clear "plastic" carpet protector for area of heavy use

I can't believe I'm asking this ,it will be sofas covered in those shiny hard clear covers that you see in American sit coms next .

But ..I've bought a new large wool rug and I don't think Scotchguard is going to cut it in the area around my partner's favourite seat .

I think it will look ghastly .I also think the amount of daily cleaning that will be necessary to combat partner and his chewing gum ,application of foot cream etc will ruin it .

For context -Partner is mid 70s ,he's not going to change .I realise I've made a mistake in buying wool .

Any ideas ?
