Fishy smell after easy care cycle on washing machine

I had to wash two fleeces as well as some sports clothes - I’ve never used easy care on this machine before but thought I’d give it a go. Used the same detergent and conditioner as always, admittedly left the wet clothes lying in the machine for a few hours but nothing I haven’t done before.

One of the fleeces and one of the shirts smell disgusting - almost a fishy smell. The other clothes don’t smell as bad but still a bit gross and definitely no fresh laundry smell. It’s also not the moldy/damp smell i had once or twice when I forgot for more than a few hours.

Nothing was in the pockets and although one of the fleeces was pretty musty, it still smelled better going in than out. What is going on here? I haven’t used this detergent on a fleece before, but it’s been fine for everything else (including synthetics).

I think the machine is fine, I did two regular loads yesterday and both smelled great…

What is the easycare cycle? Is it a really low temperature? Or does it spin less to save on ironing.

My understanding is that it’s both, low temp and less spin - suitable for synthetics

Sounds like there’s something within the fabric of the fleece that’s making it pong ! Can you rinse again and maybe try a bit of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner compartment, this should neutralise the smell.

Do you use liquid detergent? I was told by a plumber that using liquid detergent constantly can cause bad odours in your machine, you can help counteract it by alternating it with powder detergent, we had the same problem and it seemed to fix it.

Thank you - I was wondering if it might be the fleece fabric! Will give it another go with the vinegar. Also good tip on alternating with powder; I do use liquid and didn't know this...
