November Declutter

PoTayToes80 · 01/11/2022 09:32

Anyone interested in being part of a November declutter?

For me: it’s the lead up to the end of the year and I’m back at work from maternity leave in the new year. I’ve spent half my mat leave feeling like I’m on a constant tidying treadmill and have come to the conclusion it would be much easier with less stuff.

Anyone in? I’m open to methods. Eg 30 day minimalism challenge where you get rid of 1 thing on the 1st, 2 things on the 2nd etc, area per week. Or maybe we just leave it to everyone to do their own thing…

2/11 I have done a bit more, but was working late this evening. Have a free evening tomorrow so will aim to make a big dent in my study room full of crap.

PoTayToes80 · 04/11/2022 09:39

Morning :)

Slower day yesterday. Listed some maternity clothes on eBay. Threw out some really old underwear. A few more bits to charity.

Grand total of 130 items so far.

I'm not decluttering because...but I just wanted to say I love reading about your successes. 😊 It's such a positive step you're doing for yourself, your family and your quality of life. I won't be posting but lurking like others and cheering you. Flowers

PoTayToes80 · 04/11/2022 11:38

@FirstandLastBorn ahhh thank you!

I think it might take a few goes to get (close) to where I want but completing this month will definitely help! Dreaming of a house without cupboards of chaos😆

Hey y'all, I had a slow day yesterday due to some life admin - Im remortgaging and had to spend the day on the phone trying to get through to solicitors and other such joys.

I did a little research and found the 14 days to visitors plan on aslobcomesclean.com so am using the approach to try and organise my decluttering campaign. It's utterly overwhelming otherwise. Today I have been through 3 boxes of books/papers and identified 2 bags of stuff to donate and 1 bag of rubbish for recycling. Baby steps I guess. I can't say it looks much different and perhaps Im going to have to cull my book boxes again. I haven't done my before/after shots but maybe Ill do a this is what is at the door shot each day.

Today's challenge is figuring out what to do with my kids boxes of clutter. My daughter is notorious for holding on to stuff (don't know where she gets it from???) and my other half has wierd obsessions with boxes of tech and wires. He will not sort them out himself. What techniques, hacks, tips have you employed to deal with this situation? Thanks in advance for all suggestions :)

lbnblbnb · 04/11/2022 18:58

@Mamahotfoot for cables, I sorted them by type and then convinced myself we only needed one of each, and not even one of some of them (old style iPhone chargers etc 🙄

But they need sorting again. Where do they all come from???

CherrySocks · 04/11/2022 19:36

Did nothing since my last post but remembered another item I let go two days ago so I'm up to 6 in total. Slow progress.

ChuggingtonMum · 04/11/2022 20:26

I'm not making much progress here!
Jumper and book out, I posted the book so that's an envelope out too (have a stash of used ones I recycle).
Grand total 3
97 to go

I moved all the "needs to go, hard to part with" stuff to the hall but it hasn't helped.

I listed a bag of baby toys on a free site but the person wanting them is messing me around.

CherrySocks · 05/11/2022 22:03

One item today. Now 7 in total

Catchyouontheflipside · 06/11/2022 19:37

Can I join please?

ChuggingtonMum · 06/11/2022 21:07

16 things in the clothes bank and 15 rags in the clothes recycling plus the bags they went in - 31 out today and 34 so far.

I have more clothes hanging around that need sorting but I find it hard to let these go.

Mamahotfoot · 07/11/2022 13:22

Its Monday and a few days on since my last post. I'm at the stage where Im finding the gap between my desire to have a tidy organised house, and the reality that I face every day is a significant de-motivator. I'm having to dig deep to keep going and not be discouraged. Over the weekend my biggest win was that my daughter went through 2 boxes of her books and identified a modest bag to go to charity, and another set of books that she will try and sell - if not they will go out too.

I'm tackling paper work today as I have years worth of folders with stuff in that I have kept and really just needs to be shredded. I'm going to bag up the shreddable docs and take them to a shredding company that deals with confidential waste. They are a bit of a drive away but it does help me to know that the paperwork will be disposed of properly.

The other challenge is de-cluttering domino effect. I find once Ive done one spot - I take stuff to its home and find that space needs decluttering too. Do you ever get to a point where you have actually completed it????

How is everyone else doing?

@Mamahotfoot OMG I hear you. In clearing one room I just end up putting little piles of stuff in another room

@DinosaurOfFire thanks - I know that this probably is the avenue that I will follow. The only thing is that I look at the cumulative cost of all those purchases and feel appalled .... mostly at my inability to send things back within the time limit. There is possibly £100+ worth of white shirts there. Maybe I should set up a stall outside my house or the local secondary school!

Vinted is very good for selling unwanted clothing and school clothing flies.

Sorry, epic fail on the link

ChuggingtonMum · 09/11/2022 12:38

Passed on some kids clothes and threw away two mugs (branded from my old company - definitely not reusable or charity shoppable and I'm sick of the sight of them!)

56 outs so far in November. Getting there!

Some clothes have sentimental value don't they? I've found taking photos and keeping the photos helps to let them go, so you still have the memory.

CherrySocks · 09/11/2022 20:55

Today: Pair of shoes in bin and another pair ready to go to charity shop. November total nearly 9. Progress is slow.

Mamahotfoot · 29/01/2023 12:13

Hey all, just wondering how everyone got on with their decluttering? Im still at it between times. If anyone is interested I thought I might start up a New Year declutter thread - unless there is already one that Ive missed?

ChuggingtonMum · 29/01/2023 17:09

I managed 83 items! I'm on the decluttering one thing at a time thread under another name. It's pretty active, come and join us?
