IKEA/habitat European mattress

Many years ago when IKEA and habitat only sold European size beds, I bought a very expensive oak European king from
Habitat. The mattress (200cm
by 160cm) now needs replacing and neither IKEA nor Habitat sell them anymore. There are lots of people asking about this on the IKEA customer forum, very cross as their furniture is rendered obsolete - not very environmentally friendly, plus they do sell them abroad still so it’s a case of so near and yet so far. The only suggestion seems to be to buy two mattresses that they do sell 200 by 80cm but I’m worried this would mean ‘starfishing’ results in falling between the gap?

has anyone else had this issue and, if so, how did you solve it?

Had no idea. They still have the other euro sizes? V. odd. Other suppliers still do them e.g. www.cottonsafenaturalmattress.co.uk/collections/featured-products/products/cottonsafe-bed-mattress?variant=36086872703140

I like these mattresses, I’m sure there are other options.

We have 200cm beds - bought in Europe!

We have 2 x 80cm mattresses on a daybed. We bought a decent mattress topper to put over the two so there's less of a gap. It's worked a treat!

Bought one from Ikea...

They do delivery.

Alternatively you can buy them online elsewhere.

We had this issue but didn't realised until we had chucked the old mattress. Easily solved.

I got one in that size from IKEA earlier this year for the same reason as you. Maybe it's a stock issue

I had a similar issue, but bought a European size mattress from topsleep.co.uk several years ago, which was fine

@RedToothBrush sorry, when you say you bought one from IKEA, they do delivery,
did you mean from Europe as they definitely don’t sell them in the UK now, not even the topper… obviously there are tonnes in Europe.

@mafsfan I was just coming round to the two mattress plus topper idea (I can see a 200 by 160 topper on eBay) when I’ve realised that the only ones IKEA do in 80x200 are for daybeds so really thin. This is for a master bedroom and I have a bad back so I don’t think it’s an option. Definitely looks like IKEA have pulled the plug on European sizes.

I have had 2 mattresses on a king bed before. It's not ideal but if you put a tight fitting fitted sheet on to hold them together, plus a topper, it works out OK

nervous buying without trying.

thanks for the feedback on the x2 mattresses. IKEA dont do those either now in European king but I guess that’s easier to resolve. I did stock up as few years back but evidently not enough. I’ve even darned some now!

Oh to have an edit button! I meant to say IKEA don’t stock the fitted sheets now either for this size mattress so harder to get a snug fit over two mattresses. It’s easier to get sheets posted from Europe though and they are cheaper and more of a known quantity than the mattress so easier to order online.

Simba do European size mattresses.. amazing for backs too! The EU queen on their website is 160 x 200. I bought the EU double. Hope this helps!

simba in the right size on eBay. The seller
appears to be Simba. I wonder what reconditioned means for a mattress? Dirt removed maybe?

We have a European King Size bed from Habitat. We had a new mattress custom made by Hypnos, ordered from John Lewis. It’s amazing and worth every penny - it was about £900 as I recall, but that was 5 years ago.

If they offer a moneyback guarantee within a certain amount of time if you don't like it that could be what's being sold as reconditioned.

I have resorted to buying flat sheets in the UK, but I've also been to France a couple of times and have stocked up on fitted sheets at Carrefour!

Yes they do delivery on European mattresses sizes (or did do), even though they had none in stock in stores.

I'm so cross at ikea uk for not selling euro king stuff anymore. We bought a memory foam mattress 16 years ago and it could do with replacing. I don't want to buy a new bed frame as the euro king fits perfectly and I can't go back to king size. I know you can buy them online but I'd like to be able to try before I buy.

OP here… and the update is…. I still have the same mattress 😂

I did find a local stockist advertising European mattresses. They had two models so I went along to try them. One was £3500 and the other £5900. I dutifully lay on both and they felt not one jot different to my old one. Had I been instantly transported to the land of nod with my bones and joints feeling 10 again, I might have dig deep. As it is, I am
getting some more years out of the current one.
