Burning smell from my washing machine, what’s likely to be the cause?

My Bosch washing machine is about 8 years old. I use it a lot. A few days ago there was a funny smoky smell coming from it and now it won’t agitate nor spin.

After a few searches and briefly reading about belts, carbon brushes and motors I suspect it’s one of those things but does the smell indicate one over the others?

The motor could be burnt out, do you have a local appliance fixer who can take a look?

Thanks @VisitingThem.

I’m trying to get a better idea of the problem before I call someone. I’d like to avoid paying a call out fee to be told it’s not worth repairing.

We had this recently with our washing machine (also 8 years old, but a different brand). It turned out the be the bearings. Repairs would have cost more than a replacement machine, so we ended up with a new one.

That’s my fear @QuantumWeatherButterfly

Were there any other problems?

Mine still turns on and fills with water and drains.

I had this, turned out a pair of rubber soled slippers were rubbing on the seal.

Yes - it seemed to be working, but there was a really awful banging noise. I opened the door and a load of smoke came out, so I didn't turn it on again!

Sounds awful @QuantumWeatherButterfly. There was noise with mine so I might get away with a repair rather than a replacement.

With a lot of machines if the bearings go they will not be able to fix as the drum section is sealed. The bearings went on mine, it was making a banging noise as it spun, was yours making any weird noises before it broke?

LostMyUserName · 14/10/2022 07:15

No noise at all @VisitingThem. I'm hopeful that means my machine can be fixed.

I've got a number of a man who can so I'll ask him to come and have a look.

I had this. Turned it off and on again and it's been fine since.
