If your house smells nice..

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 06/10/2022 14:43

What do you use? Why does it smell so good?

My house just doesn't smell of anything whereas other peoples all seem to have "a smell"! My house is clean and tidy and the only pets we have are two guinea pigs but it just smells of nothing!

I bought a couple of diffusers from Next but unless I'm right in top of them I can smell them and my husband said the same.

What do I need to use?

You might just have weak diffusers. If you've only just got them they might not have reached their full scent yet.
Is your house open plan? Because it's hard for the scent to stay around if it's open plan or you keep the inside doors open.
You could try Febreze or scented candles.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 06/10/2022 14:49

Incense sticks.

Dou8hnuts · 06/10/2022 14:50

Wax Melts are my main go to but I also have carpet freshener and hoover discs so even if I run the hoover round it gives off a scent around the house for ages after.

echt · 06/10/2022 23:19

Open doors and windows as much as possible.

Peppermint Grove reed diffusers in Gardenia.

echt · 06/10/2022 23:20

And keep turning the sticks so they don't dry out.

QforCucumber · 06/10/2022 23:22

I have lavender oil on a cotton ball in the hoover
an M&S electric diffuser with their ‘calm’ oil an hour or 2 a day straight after work (cheap version of neom one)
and a spritz of lemongrass and lavender mix which I spray on the fabrics now and then

NisekoWhistler · 06/10/2022 23:23

Open the windows regularly, clean regularly and have plenty of house plants

BlueKaftan · 06/10/2022 23:24

Just got this and it’s so lovely

Fluffyowl00 · 06/10/2022 23:25

You don’t ever smell your house because you are used to it. Just like you don’t really smell your own perfume.

MarmiteCoriander · 06/10/2022 23:26

You do realise that people become nose blind in their own home? If the guinea pigs live inside, I can guarantee that others can smell them- even if you can't!

Diffusers, evolution changing smell things, fragrant flowers and smelly things can help, but regular cleaning of floors and soft furnishing etc helps also.

Nyfluff · 06/10/2022 23:28

I open windows, clean and have house plants too as I can't think of anything worse than chemical artificial stuff, it's nauseating, and I wouldn't want my pets breathing it in either.

PinkStickleBrick · 06/10/2022 23:33

Zaflora. A few drops on a damp cloth when your dusting or wiping over the floors. I soak my washing up brushes / cloths in a weak zaflora solution too. It's quite smelly.

If anyone is visiting then bleach down the plug holes.

I'm sure my house smells but I can't tell. I think Reed diffusers are best on bedside tables. You can really smell them better in smaller rooms like bedrooms

Missikat13 · 06/10/2022 23:38

I got some black pomegranate scented Reed diffusers after smelling the scent at a friend's. It's unusual, slightly musky, not fruity but lovely. Now my house smells great too! Try it.

IrisVersicolor · 06/10/2022 23:43

Diffusers make me gag. I make my own spray with essential oils.

PeloFondo · 06/10/2022 23:48

Febreze small spaces air fresheners in the bathrooms
Reed diffusers (I like the botanical candle company ones, beauty pie clean house is good as well)
Wax melts
Stuff like blankets, coats washed regularly and I'm conscious of food smells as open plan living

There will be a whole host of posts about chemicals, hating artificial smells and opening windows now Grin

I do open my windows daily, unless it's pouring down or freezing they're open most of the time but I like scents and people comment my house smells nice. Police came over once, I opened the door and she went "god that smell is amazing what is it? Oh sorry, it's the police here" Grin

Supersimkin2 · 06/10/2022 23:50

Fresh air freak here, so small windows always open in every room. I’d rather be cold than whiffy.

Zaflora in hoover does two jobs at once. Ditto cafetière and bake-yourself croissants.

Lilies are brilliant for scenting rooms but not if you have cats (toxic). Hyacinths too. Tomato plant and mint on kitchen windowsill pour summer smell in for months.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 06/10/2022 23:50

I use diffuser from next and I do smell them except the lemon grass one. Op Guinea pigs definitely do smell especially when the wee. We had 2 Guinea pigs and everyone who came into our house could smell them including ourselves.

HeadacheEarthquake · 06/10/2022 23:51

I'm here to advocate for windows open in the morning and candles in the eve. Or a good hoover scent they seem to last for an era.

Also fresh flowers if you're entertaining
Freesia pong quite robustly.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/10/2022 23:53

Fresh air
Linen fresh or cotton fresh ‘flavoured’ wax melts
I also used a lovely fresh cleaning spray from Aldi.
Plus I do steam clean regularly and wash things like throws and cushion covers.

Spectre8 · 06/10/2022 23:53

Open windows and have airlock freshmatic sprays one upstairs and one downstairs. They last about a month on lowest spray setting.

pandora206 · 06/10/2022 23:59

Wash soft furnishings often (including bedding) though no overpowering softeners.
Polish wood furniture with beeswax polish
Use a breadmaker overnight.
Real coffee in cafetiere.
Subtle candles burned for an hour or so only. My favourite is St Eval Bay and Rosemary.
Fresh flowers. I love lilies but not everyone does.
Fresh air first thing in the morning. Open windows when cooking and clean up immediately.

Foxylass · 07/10/2022 00:05

How lovely that your home is not full of synthetic scents and chemicals.

On occasion my house smells of polish (really not often), and while cooking, it smells of ...cooking.... then clean up and the smell goes.

If I have flowers, it smells of flowers.
That is it.

HighlandPony · 07/10/2022 00:08

Scentsy burners. I was very opposed to them at first thinking it a fad but my friends daughter started selling it on her maternity leave (and I’m now in with the young ones having just had another baby myself) so I bought some more out of support for her because she’s self employed but I’m addicted now

justasking111 · 07/10/2022 00:10

Reed diffusers, opening windows. I use cloths to clean bathroom zoflora in the water then hang cloths over the towel rail or bath. As they dry the perfume is lovely

ninetieseyebrows · 07/10/2022 00:12

Asevi 21143 Concentrated Floor Cleaner, Cyan, 1000 ml amzn.eu/d/fi36Aqm
