dunno how often to do them not very often for stuff which is kept in boxes so it stays clean but the stuff which is in the playpen and big stuff like fisher price dinasoar giraffe dancin band stand stuff which is kept out seems to get really dusty i always steam clean it as it is quick and easy instead of messing about with wiping stuff then drying it so need some advice please

never

Twiglett · 21/01/2008 22:31

apart from wiping off obvious crud

anything else is overkill

colditz · 21/01/2008 22:31

personally, when I notice something is dirty I wipe it with a damp cloth ... that's about it!

Maidamess · 21/01/2008 22:32

I never washed a baby toy in my life! (Unless it was slung out onto the pavement out of the pram) I have 3 healthy children, who survived!

StripeyMamaSpanx · 21/01/2008 22:32

When you catch the dog with them in our house...

DontDreamItBeIt · 21/01/2008 22:33

When I got them if they were second hand and grubby, and again just before they went to the charity shop.

HeppyChick · 21/01/2008 22:34

When you have friends with babies coming for lunch who may balk at the state of your toys.

babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:35

yeah but they get real dirty and dusty or is this just in my house lol

Maidamess · 21/01/2008 22:35

Sling them in the washing machine and peg them out.

brimfull · 21/01/2008 22:37

just before you flog them/give them to a friend otherwise never

Twiglett · 21/01/2008 22:39

wild stab in the dark

first baby?

PrettyCandles · 21/01/2008 22:42

If they've been vomitted or pee'd or pooed on, or if they're crusted, or disgusting to touch, or sticky, or won't move because of gunk in joints etc, then they get cleaned or slung in the washing machine (depending on what theyr'e made of). But routine cleaning? Never. A bit of dirt's good for the immune system.

babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:42

yeah but the toys are dirty thye get real dusty cos they are kept on the floor and we have pets 2 i don't really want him playing with toys which are dirty but don't know how often to do them

I'm with Twiglett - obvious crude only.

Think we are all getting shown up for our slovenly ways.... How exactly do you steam clean????

colditz · 21/01/2008 22:44

Whenever they are dirty then.

You would have a LOT more luck keeping them clean if you kept them in a big laundry basket or something

PrettyCandles · 21/01/2008 22:45

Have you taken him to playgroups yet? Put him in a creche? What about the doctor's surgery? Do you think the toys there are ever cleaned?

babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:45

it is like a vacuem u put tap water in it and wait for it to heat up then just spray i tover then wipe but it doesn't always need wiping cos it is only steam it don't matter if a bit stays on there

OP posts:
babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:46

PrettyCandles if we go to doctors i don't let him play with them i was never allowed to just the thought of it makes me crinnge

Twiglett · 21/01/2008 22:47

look

the healthiest children in the whole country are those who grow up on farms playing in the muck

too much cleaning will make your baby sick

let it develop its immune system the way it's supposed to

stick the toys in a box

wipe off obvious crud

but if you're steam cleaning toys on a regular basis you are turning into Bree from desperate housewives

pull back from the brink of insanity

babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:49

believe me if u saw our house u would know we are not clean clean lolbut the big toys are impossible to put in boxes they are huge

colditz · 21/01/2008 22:50

If you try to shield your baby from dirt he is more likely to develop allergies. Dirt does not harm - fussiness harms.

colditz · 21/01/2008 22:52

Think of it like this - if you don't allow him some germs now, he will be off school every week in his first year .... and that's not good, because by that time you might have a job, and a bit of your life back!

Cali · 21/01/2008 22:52

Never clean toys unless dog has played with them first, Dd1 (2y) and Dd2 (5months) very healthy. Agree with Twiglett that too much cleaning make children sick. Living in a germ free environment, well as germ free as possible, does not give children's immune systems a chance to develop properly, which IMO could be the reason why allergies are on the increase.

babyjjbaby · 21/01/2008 22:53

yeah but he will not be allowed to play with dirty toys he ahs just turned 7mths do u see what i mean i used to clean all his toys once aweek but he has got so many toys that most of them don't get got out thats why the ones in the boxes stay clean but big toys can't go in boxes
