Weird cupboard with odd access.

So. I have an old boiler cupboard in the hall which is now empty (no boiler).

There is a shelf towards the top but because the space goes all the way up to the ceiling and the door is, well usual door height, we have all this space ‘upwards’ which is a bugger to access.

At the moment I keep towels and sheets in there but have to add new ones at the bottom of the pile by pushing the rest up and slipping them at the bottom of the pile (if that makes sense) as there is about a foot of space above the shelf that I can see before it disappears into the void.

Am I missing a trick here? Apart from getting a builder to take away the wall above the door and make another access door higher up.

Add another shelf or two so you're not having to shove stuff in at the bottom of the heap?
OR
Keep tall things in it?

I can’t get another shelf in because it would be above the door frame. The lower of the shelves is used for having shirts and coats, so that’s ok. We don’t have a lot of space so it’s a pain to have about 2 feet of cupboard that you can’t access easily.

I think what you're doing makes sense. We keep wrapping paper in ours, and tubs that are short enough to come out easily. You can also possibly do stuff like small suitcases, buckets and spades that are quite narrow front to back.

I have a cupboard on the landing like this and the shelves are too deep. I took the top shelf out and cut it to half the depth then added another shallow shelf above it.

Some sort of pulley system? The way the ceiling mounted laundry airers work? It could only work if it had space to come down in the front of the cupboard though.
