I'm struggling to keep on top of the house atm 😫Feel like I'm always cleaning but every time I look there's always mess somewhere!!

If your house is always neat and tidy what are the main things you do every day to keep it that way?

I don’t have any fixed routine, the kitchen gets cleaned/tidied every day, bathroom and loo every other day. Whole house cleaned through weekly, downstairs hoovered most days.
Only DH me and DDog here so if DH is away it barely needs anything done every day.

My routine?

Walk into a room > frown and/or tut at its untidiness > invite someone over > panic clean the whole house in preparation for guest > allow house to fall gradually into disarray > repeat

It’s really about decluttering. If you have clearer surfaces and floors it’ll look better to begin with and cleaning will take less time as you don’t need to move things out of the way. It’s taken a few years to thoroughly declutter my house and I just have toys to finish really as dc are growing up.

I always aim to have my house ten minutes away from being ready for visitors - less if possible. This is mainly the areas that visitors would see so my bedroom and study are certainly not cleaned that often but

  • I make sure all washing up is done, sink cleaned, dishwasher stuff put away as soon as possible
  • i clean and polish kitchen surfaces every day - it only takes a couple of minutes before and after a meal. Often dc do this
  • ideally post is filed/ chucked out/ shredded / dealt with the day it arrives - although sometimes it’ll take a week (this used to be a massive issue but you can see my post table from the front door so is important)
  • I have a handheld hoover to do obvious leaves / bits of rubbish in the hall, sometimes I’ll use it daily or a dustpan and brush takes two minutes, and then will hoover the rest of the house about once a week - more if it needs it. We take our shoes off in the hall and it’s the only carpet that ever gets dirty
  • If I’m waiting for the kettle to boil or am cooking dinner I’ll declutter cupboards or the fridge - maybe just one gone off item rather than a full declutter. Bin day is Tuesday so on Monday I’ll run around emptying bins and taking gone off food out of the fridge.
  • Ill clean the toilets people see about two or three times a week and make sure sink areas are free of clutter
  • I currently have a Lego / playmobil mess in the playroom as im decluttering so I close the playroom door and set a timer a few times a week to deal with it
  • things to be recycled are organised - batteries / lightbulbs have a box, bottles go in the car. I try to keep as much charity shop / recycling stuff in the car so I can get rid of it weekly.
  • I sell loads of second hand stuff on Facebook marketplace but if it’s not gone in a couple of weeks I take it to a charity shop so it doesn’t sit around.

The house is hoovered and downstairs floors swept once a week.
Bathrooms once a week.
Kitchen once a week.
I certainly don't clean daily!!!!

I agree with decluttering. My problem is books and files so I do try to get rid of the former and put the latter into a filing cabinet. My main problem is my DP - a hoarder of clothes and shoes and newspaper articles. I surreptitiously get rid. I cannot imagine cleaning every day apart from kitchen and loo. For environmental reasons I try not to use a tumble dryer - and don't have a dishwasher. I reckon my GM and DM managed without when both were working so I can too.
