Handwashing with shampoo - advisable?

Weird question but I usually wash my swimming costume in shampoo or liquid soap, but liquid soap has been out of stock the last few times I went to get it so I've mainly used shampoo (the very basic kind) recently.

While washing my swimming costume it crossed my mind whether I could save money by washing my handwash-only clothes in shampoo/soap too? I usually buy a special liquid but when I compare the cost, shampoo or soap would be cheaper. And aren't they all just soap anyway? Or maybe there are important differences?

I'm old enough to remember bars of kitchen soap that were used for washing clothes. Shampoo is not going to contain the enzymes, brighteners etc that are in washing powder, but you don't really need those for something that has just been worn briefly and isn't really dirty.

I don't swim, but on holidays, I rinse out my bikini while in the shower. Every few wears, I hand wash it. I use whatever is available (I take washing powder for longer holidays and use soap for short breaks).

You could, but hand washing clothing with shampoo is going to be expensive. It may be cheaper than special hand wash laundry soap, but that stuff is literally a rip off. I just hand wash my clothes using regular laundry soap.

I always wash swimming stuff in shampoo on holiday, but I don’t think it’s going to do the same job as washing powder long term. I don’t buy hand washing liquid, I dissolve a bit of washing powder in the water I’m going to handwash in.
