I tend to just use wipes, but they don’t really get rid of the dust, it just collects in the grooves and the paint also seems to peel off..

The hoover can help pick up lose dust a little so try that but it does need wiped down with a cloth and keep repeating until it's all gone. You need to put your finger under the cloth so it cleans in the grooves. Drives me mad I hate cleaning so much!

I sweep woodwork with the brush that goes with the dustpan, that seems to get into all the gaps

Argh my most hated cleaning area! Do a proper job with a damp microfibre cloth then go over with a bounce sheet or similar to reduce the static and repel the dust. Then keep on top of it with soft brush hoover attachment.

I hoover mine then wipe them with a cloth about twice a year

You have the same skirting boards as me OP. I use a dry microfibre cloth, and for the corners/door frames and a clean old toothbrush to get to the hard to reach areas. Get the dust off really easily.
