Washing machine being weird?!

OK this is going to sound daft but…

the washing machine does a wash cycle then rinse cycle then spin cycle, then end.

when I put my washing machine on the normal day cycle (one hour long) I feel like it’s not doing the wash cycle properly. It rotates one way five ish times, then stops, then rotates the other way five ish times, then stops. And then back again. (It gives me the impression of when it’s an unbalanced load and it’s trying to redistribute the load the whole time. It doesn’t spin one way for a length of time before going back)

IS THIS WHAT A WASH CYCLE IS MEANT TO DO?

the soap is def going in, the rinse cycle does it’s thing and so does the spin. But I’m not convinced that the wash cycle is meant to do as I’ve described. And when I take washing out some of it still feels a bit dry in the middle, or only mildly damp like it hasn’t been washed. I don’t believe it’s overloaded.

I’ve had a few problems with this machine even though it’s Samsung and mid range price and only a few years old.

But now I’m looking at the wash cycle I don’t know whether this is actually normal
or not. Is it trying to redistribute (if so why isn’t the error code ever showing)?

it obviously can spin properly because the washing doesn’t come out sopping and I can hear it/see it. But I’m not convinced now on what a wash cycle is meant to look like! Anyone please tell me what they think.

One hour isn’t very long.
is it actually a delicate cycle or fast wash or something? Our fast wash does the one way than another way wash. It’s because it agitates more than a normal wash.
A ‘normal’ wash on ours is nearly 3 hours long!

googled a model number and download the instruction manual, that should tell you.

Is it on a delicate or low spin cycle?

Yarnasaurus · 15/07/2022 16:43

If some of it is coming out dry then you are definitely overloading the machine. Check the manual for max loads for each cycle as they vary hugely.

@Ontomatopea @Wellthatsjustswell it is on the “daily wash” cycle and looking at the manual it says shirts and socks etc. it’s about an hour, I’ve never used the longer cycles like cotton as they are like 2-4 hours which seems like a very long time? (Is everyone using these long cycles??) The machine does have short cycles at 30 or 15 mins but they only wash at low temperatures so I use them occasionally.

@Yarnasaurus maybe I’ll wash less and see if it makes a difference

weird because I’ve used this cycle for 2 years but never had this issue with it trying to balance the load, or so it looks like to me.

Manual doesn’t say much about the wash cycle patterns unfortunately

1hr is a short wash and usually that sort of cycle has a lower max load. eg our machine is 9kg and the max load for a 1hr cycle is 4kg.

We have a Samsung and our daily wash is 4.5 hrs at 40 degrees, this is the cotton cycle with 'intensive' option selected for washing cloth nappies (2 in cloth). for general clothes we'd use a shorter cycle but also only approx half fill it.

but if you've always used that cycle and loaded it that amount then maybe something is up.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/07/2022 21:55

I also have a Samsung and the washes are a lot shorter. I tend to put on a 'mixed load' or 'colours' about 1-1.5 hours. I also use bedding which is about 2hours. We had problems with our old Samsung but that was more with the spinning and when the guy came out he said it was all broken inside. It does sound like it's not working properly.

My machine has a 15 minute cycle the clothes come out clean (I do a longer wash occasionally) it's never dry in the middle even on a 1600 spin
