My washing never smells fresh and clean after a wash. I recently bought a new machine and it still doesn’t. I put the correct detergents in and the clothes just need freshening it’s never anything properly dirty. I’ve tried hot washes, cooler washes, longer or shorter and they still never smell of the softener or detergent. What am I doing wrong?

What do they smell of?

Are you overloading the machine?

Is the machine definitely heating the water when you wash on hot?

What combinations of detergents and softeners are you using?

Do you take the load out as soon as it has finished?

I'd try: fewer items in each wash. An extra rinse setting. And try some laundry disinfectant. You shouldn't need it all of the times but I'd buy a big bottle and try and make sure everything gets washed using that in the final rinse stage. And once it's gone, you shouldn't need to use it again. Also run a maintenance wash.

Are you sure though, it's not your sense of smell? Have you had covid?

I had this problem and it turned out the heating element wasn't working. New machine and everything has been fine since.

It’s often overloading the machine - when you put the washing in there should be a generous handspan between the load and the machine, without squashing the load down.

Also are you talking it out quickly? That’s the other thing.

You don’t especially want them smelling of detergent though?

You just want them not smelling musty.

Check the hardness of your water.
Hard water areas require more detergent. We live in a hard water area and the blue lenor always makes my washing smell nice.
