Are handheld steam mops good for carpet stains?

Please share your wisdom... We get stains on our carpets all the time from having three young children. We couldn't get a professional carpet cleaner in every time... What products would people recommend? Would one of those small handheld steam cleaners make a difference? Thanks.

No, they do not (well, they definitely don't get tomato pasta stains off the carpet but they do work well on slime). I am looking at getting a handheld carpet and upholstery cleaner for spot cleaning.

Thank you! I might have to invest in a Vax carpet cleaner. Is there anything similar but smaller available though? We are struggling a bit with storage space already.
