Does anyone make their own and does it work?

I do - half and half grated soap and soda crystals whizzed in food processor. I mix in Aldi washing powder for scent, brighteners etc, but during lockdown didn't bother and I didn't really notice the difference.

I have done for about 8 years, as it is the only thing that DS was not hideously allergic to.
Used this liquid recipe but with baby castille soap or goats milk soap and without the lavender.

It works. It cleans but it is not super with whites, so DHs shirts are laundered at the dry cleaner.
I dont know if it is a new formulation or if DS is finally growing out of simply hideous eczema but the new Surcare sensitive (not the old one which was evil!) has not triggered him yet...

Which soap do you use @Cynderella?@Cynderella

AfPCheckYourFile · 21/06/2022 18:03

Sorry - not sure why it did that with your name twice!

I have made my own using soap and soda crystals and I don’t love it, our water is very hard and I don’t think it’s great. Bar soap turns very scummy in shower anyway so probably to be expected. I used the Nancy Birtwhistle recipe.

Next time I’ll search for a recipe specifically for hard water, I suspect the ratios need tweaking

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 21/06/2022 19:14

ps we have hard water

woopdedoodle · 21/06/2022 19:20

You need borax and washing soda, and you can even make your own soap.

For cleaning lard makes a solid white soap which won't lather in the tub.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 21/06/2022 19:50

@Sillybillypoopoomummy do you use Borax substitute?

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 21/06/2022 19:58

yes, the one amazon sells - did not notice a difference between the real stuff to be fair!

Cynderella · 22/06/2022 08:12

I use bog bars of olive oil soap from Amazon - pack of ten on subscribe and save. Our water is very hard.

First time, I grated in food processor and mixed with soda crystals. It worked, but soap didn't always dissolve and I'd find bits on black tops. Now I grate, mix and then mix again with the food processor blade, so that it's a fine powder.

For whites, I do add a scoop of Ariel.
