Steam cleaner for uneven surface

I have a riven slate floor and it needs a deep clean. I have tried two upright floor cleaners but the steam just escapes out of the sides and leaves a puddle of water without penetrating or lifting the dirt. This won’t need to be done often, so I am wondering if a hand held cleaner would work. Any suggestions?

We used to have one. The only thing that would clean it was a scrubbing brush and elbow grease sadly. I was so glad to see the back of it...it was black slate and only ever looked clean for 5 minutes!
