can't really help as I've bought three over the years, big names and different brands. All were good initially all stopped working within two years. I now get someone to clean my carpets!

I bought a refurbished Bissell on ebay. I would look for refurbished deals like this one which is curre £127 (RRP £280):

Rent a rug Dr from asda!!

Have you considered renting one from HSS Hire or similar? It's only about £20 per day and they're generally much better build quality than what an individual can afford. You will be saving storage space in your cupboard, and hiring appliances is better use of the earth's resources too!

Thanks everyone. I will probably rent one but I have dogs so would like to clean semi regularly
