hello my 2.5 year old got hold of our hairdryer and held it against the carpet and now we have 4 heat ring marks. the carpet is less than a year old and our house is on the market. it is in one of the bedrooms when you walk in near a door next to the bed. i think we should put a sheepskin rug down but husband says we should leave it. what do you think? Appreciate your view. thank you very much

id put a rug over it

(and keep 2 year old away from hair dryer in future )

do you mean put a rug down so that potential buyers won't see it? No, I would leave it so they can see it (or if you want to put a rug down, show them that there are scorch marks underneath)

it seems dishonest otherwise tbh

When my sister was about 3 and set fire to her bedroom carpet with a thing you put into coffee to heat it up, my mum and dad were able to claim on their house insurance. Would you be able to do that?

perpetualworrier · 07/01/2008 20:45

I would hv thought you can claim on hse insurance too. Depending on what the burn's like, you may be able to trim the carpet to remove it.

That's what I did when some hot coals got dropped and you'd never have known. Although the mark looked bad, on closer inspection, it was just the ends that were burned.

do be careful though...

my bosses move house summer 2006

earlier in 2006 they made a very minor claim of their house insurance.

then they moved house.... and my DB was telling me how because they had made a claim they wouldnt even quote them for a new policy... he couldnt believe it!

perptualworrier how did you trim it? my carpet is short pile with pattern beige. thank you everyone

When my mums carpet got burnt with an iron she used a piece from the leftovers to patch it could you do that?

callmeovercautious · 07/01/2008 21:48

Idris beat me to it - do you have accidental damage cover? You could maybe allow a buyer to pick their own replacement if it is in Budget?

If not put the rug down then when they have made an offer and you have to come down a bit, include that in the reasons for accepting less?

I must admit I always lift rugs to check as I got stung once when the lovely lounge with a wooden floor turned out to have cut floorboards in the middle of it
