Washing machine leaving dirty marks on clothes

Our basic Indesit washing machine is now 14 years old and feels like it's getting noisier but still works. I've recently noticed marks on the washed clothes though- firstly black little spots and more recently brown lines like this picture. I've tried a washing machine cleaner you put through on a hot wash and it's still happening. Any tips? Or is it time for a new one?

I'd actually like a new one with a drum bigger than 6kg but feel I can't justify it when it still works...

Looks like gunk from the rubber
I stopped using softer as this seemed to make the build up in the rim worse.
Just wipe it out

Buy a bottle of washing machine cleaner and run it through as per the instructions. Wipe down the inside of the rubber seal and clean out the detergent drawer. That should help.

We called an engineer our fur this problem a few weeks ago. There was gunk somewhere from fabric softeners (not sure exactly where, I was out and DH dealt with it). He did a big clean on the machine and advised us in future to run the hottest wash possible once every 3 months with no clothes in the machine. In your case a new machine may be better value than calling out an engineer if the washing machine cleaner/very hot wash doesn’t work

I had bought some COLGAN and he said that was a waste of money 😬

In my experience - too noisy when spinning, marks on clothes - the bearings went so I replaced machine. 14 years with a 6kg, it has served you well!

Do you use liquid or pods to wash ?

Brunonono · 19/03/2022 08:20

Thanks for tips everyone. I've used some anti-mould cleaner on the rubber seal and given a good scrub with an old bottle brush. Taken out drawer and cleaned all that and visible parts inside and put it on one final hot wash to see if this fixes it.

I tried the cleaning powder you run through, use powder not liquid and don't use fabric conditioner so if this doesn't work a new machine it will be I think.

It really has served us well - not used as heavily when there was just the two of us but does a load a day now we have kids!

Justify a new one by remembering that a new one with larger capacity will be more efficient.

I had exactly the same marks on my washing OP. I read somewhere it’s made worse by using fabric softener so I stopped using it for a while, or mixed it with water before adding it. I cleaned out the detergent drawer really well and also ran a cleaning solution through at a high temperature. Seemed to sort it.

Also justify a new one by remembering the value of the clothes trashed

Ordered a new one!
