HELP! OMG something has munched a big hole in my carpet!!

Just found a big bald patch in our newish wool carpet. It's near the top of the stairs, so can't have been there long. The wool has been munched through to dust. I'm assuming it's some kind of insect.
What could it be?
How do I stop it spreading?
How do I treat it?

All advice welcome.

It could be a large and voracious moth? How quickly did it happen?

I've just had a google. It could be carpet beetle larvae by the looks of it. God only knows how it got in. We have the same wool carpet going from downstairs right up to and in the loft. Bugger, bugger.

Anyone had this. Can I treat it myself, or do I call the pest controllers in?

I am not sure, I think you might need to call the council. Hope you can get hold of someone today - they are usually great at advice, if not willing to help in practise!

..I rang once about carpet beetle and I got the whole life cycle spouted at me, the guy was obviously in the right job

Helpfully I have forgotten it all now...

Have just looked up the number for council and local pest control company.....

Call them!! I hope it gets sorted & doesn't ruin your carpets!!
