White vinegar in the washing machine

White vinegar is the only thing I've found that stops my teen DCs' shirt armpits smelling, without washing at very high temperatures. I use a plant spray and spray the armpits before they go in the machine, then wash as usual, but it's a faff, is there an easier way to use white vinegar for this purpose. Could I just add it to the wash? How much?

I've used it as a fabric softener, so just a cap full in the softener dispenser. I don't know if it will work in the same way as you spraying, but worth a go I guess.

I would continue to spray if you're using it for that purpose, for maximum effectiveness!

I, too, have used, and occasionally still do, in place of fabric softener, but I'm sure it's not advised to use it in the washing machine like that very often, some sort of damage I think, unless I'm confusing it with something else.

I mostly use malt vinegar as it's cheaper and just chuck a load into the conditioner compartment with some essential oil.

I think you are as vinegar is good to keep limescale off the washing machine as well.

I've read not to use vinegar in dishwashers (in place of rinse aid). I think because it sits in the rinse aid compartment for a long time, so has a chance to corrode parts. So you might be thinking of that.

I use vinegar with every clothes wash, in the fabric softener drawer. (Have never used fabric softener) It gets flushed through with plenty of water automatically. We actually use a much more concentrated vinegar than is available in the UK and it recommends on the bottle to use it this way, as being good for the laundry and good to keep the machine free of limescale.

I know this is a really old thread but I can't find any more recent one about vinegar in the washing machine.

Does anyone use vinegar instead of fabric softener and have you noticed any deterioration in your clothes since you started using vinegar? I wash everything on 20'C and use vinegar in place of fabric conditioner and noticed the elastic on underwear (even new underwear) has started to deteriorate quickly.
