How to secure a flat screen TV?

Hubby desperately wants a giant (42 or 50 inch!! ) flat screen TV but we cannot figure out how we would secure the thing so it would be safe around our soon-to-be toddler. We don't have anywhere to hang it on a wall so we are trying to figure out how we could secure it on a table or stand so it wouldn't pose a tipping-over hazard. Any suggestions? Or are we just asking for trouble by having one in our living room- the only place we have for DD to play in?

we just bought one (although not that big!) and the pedestal weighs an absolute ton, DH could hardly lift it so i guess it is designed not to fall over as it is so heavy at the base.

The pedestal meaning the stand it's on, or the actual bottom of the TV?

My friends have one on a sideboard - not quite that big, but anyway - they have somehow bolted it to the wall... could you do that?

Ours has a pedestal with a massive flat base that weighs a ton and it stands on a tv stand. It can be fixed to the wall but wall not in the right place !!!
