Why is my dishwasher being an arsehole?

It keeps producing "clean" stuffed flecked with baked on black bits. The stuff on the top rack gets the brunt of it, but some stuff on the lower rack is affected too.

I'm nearly 6 months pregnant & we are due to replace the kitchen including the dishwasher in the next 10-12 weeks (I know, my timing is awful) so I don't want to invest too much time & energy into it but I also don't want to wash up if possible.

So far I have done the following;

  • refilled rinse and and salt
  • clean out the catcher thingy
  • hottest wash, empty, with dishwasher tablet
  • hottest wash, empty but with generous amount of bicarb of soda

Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the spray jet thingies on the arms

PostThenGhost · 03/02/2022 18:51

Run it with an actual dishwasher cleaner in it.

Wipe all around the rubber seals AND, with the door wide open, you will find loads of gunk under the bottom hinge/lip of the door when you rub there with a cloth.
Unscrew both the arms and rinse them out too.

I scrape any debris off the dishes before they get dishwashed. I know it defeats the object but I still soak dishes for a bit also before dishwashing.
Are you maybe stacking too close?

Triffid1 · 03/02/2022 18:53

Yes, check that the arms are a) moving well and b) aren't blocked. You can just take them off and run them under the tap. If any of the jets from there aren't working properly you get the irritating black flecks on the upper rack stuff.

Sounds like the arms aren't spinning

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/02/2022 19:13

I didn't know the arms could be removed! I'll give that a go.

Remove the blades and run water through them. There may be debris inside preventing it from cleaning.

I've just done this - had no idea it was a thing Blush Definitely some limescale blocking those. I've stuck it on with half a load of stuff it gunked on to see what happens.

How have you gone on @AwkwardPaws27

AwkwardPaws27 · 04/02/2022 20:41

The half load I did last night seemed a lot better than previous ones - but I'm delaying judgement til I see how it gets on with a full load this evening!

I'm hoping cleaning the arms has done the trick though.

Just put away the full load from yesterday evening & it looks like cleaning the arms has solved the issue. Thanks all!

Nice one Smile

A lot of people don’t realise that you need to regularly clean a dishwasher. Today, I took out the basket, the twist tube basket and the flat plate from the bottom of my dishwasher. It was disgusting 🤢
Glad the dishwasher seems like it’s working again.

Another thing that can cause "clean" dishes covered in residue is when the dishwasher is connected to the sink pipe. When the sink pipe gets blocked in my sink, it does that. Some drain cleaner down the sink, sorts that.

I clean under the flat plate, the filter thing, & run it empty on the hottest setting with bicarb or white vinegar every couple of months - I just had no idea the arms came off Blush

Ooh guess I'm going to have to clean the dishwasher arms as this is sometimes an issue for us with the glasses
