Fledglings bolt into Spring! Fresh air, fresh flowers, fresh sheets – No fledgling left behind…

BeanAnTae · 30/01/2022 16:20

Thread starts on 1 February, but you are welcome to land and say hello until then
Thank you to Hills who has given us a tour-de-force thread for the deepest, darkest days of January when we were all flagging. We all know you are really busy and appreciate the time you took to go in depth with the baby steps.
Welcome to Flylady if you are a newbie or a regular fledgling– it is a zone based cleaning system, spread out over 4-6 weeks (depending on how the month falls.) The zones cover different areas of the home so we concentrate on a particular zone in a given week. But there is also a weekly hour of cleaning (can be split into 10 min segments) to make sure the bins are emptied, main areas hoovered, sheets changed – you get the drift…
And each day of the week has a focus – Thursday is errand day for example.

So , today is Tuesday 1 February – the first day of Spring if you are joining us in the North Hemisphere or Happy Autumn to those in the South. This thread brings you right up to Pancake Tuesday which is 1 March 2022.
Flylady site
This week we are in 2 Zones:
Zone 5: The Living Room
Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room
February Habit: Decluttering for 15 Minutes a Day

Monday – Weekly Home Blessing
Tuesday – Plan and Play
Wednesday – Anti-Procrastination Day
Thursday – Errand Day
Friday – Clean-out your Purse and Car Day
Saturday – Family Fun Day
Sunday – Renew your Spirit Day

It is plan and play day on Tuesdays – I usually plan menus and things to do on Tuesdays but the system is customisable to what works for you and your life.
Feel free to jump onto the thread and post your To Do list of household and family stuff achieved and, if you like, post your Ta Da list when you’ve got stuff done. We all encourage each other along and we all have different lives, pressures etc and we are not at all precious about the system – it can be used as you see fit. For example I don’t clean my dining room in zone 1 as it’s part of my living area so I do it in zone 5.
There is a general mantra of ‘No fledgling left behind’ which basically means you can’t fall behind in the system – you just start up again. So there’s no need for a massive Spring Clean – you just jump in.
Some jargon has evolved over the years, for example – cherry waves was an autocorrect of cheery waves, the pointy stick ---> is sometimes requested if you are having particular problems with procrastination and the naughty corner which is where we collapse to take a break.
As well as ‘To Do’, I’m going to try ‘To Be’ because I’m a Human Being not just a Human Doing. So my aim is to be more present (on the thread and in my head!) and more positive. I live far north in the UK so it is pretty dark here at the moment and I am SO looking forward to more daylight. And a shiny sink!

Red i may not be able to fix my nonsense but at least i am aware of my nonsense Grin

Me: i'll sign up for that really interesting training.

Email: urm that training is only available for a limited time that is running out soon.
Me: well crap
My brain: oh for the love of sanity woman - could you not have started this so we could do one section at a time? I am soooo fried already?! And there is more?!!!!! Don't do this again!
Common sense: yeah no promises on this, it's a thing.

BeanAnTae · 16/02/2022 21:02

I want a brisk and efficient morning routine like wassail (stamps foot)

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 16/02/2022 21:05

AH good to see the early bedtime babystep is still number 17. And i still fail hard at that one. and have done ALWAYS

Thanks for the links bean hope the storms aren't hitting you badly.

BeanAnTae · 16/02/2022 21:12

Well all quiet on the northern front Hills but the council have told us not to walk on Woodlands because of the risk of falling trees, weakened by previous storms. And it's due to snow on Friday. Work has told us to be careful and to go home early if necessary.

How are things southwards, with the hills?

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 16/02/2022 21:38

well i considered an evening walk but the trees were bending hard and the rain was horizontal and yet again we are missing the snow. Tbh there will be a lot of fallen trees, there has been a huge amount down in the last few weeks anyway so it will be the long way around to the shops, and sitting on top of the hill will be like sitting in a boat on rough waters. Hoping the roof tiles stay on the roof, and by the house trees stay upright, the wind is coming from the wrong direction for the village to be protected from it.

I either want a load of snow, else I am ready for warm nice weather now.

I have grabbed a late coffee which i will regret hard later. Going to be a late night of hard concentrations

frankiefirstyear · 16/02/2022 22:19

Bathroom done for me today, helped massively by the tidal wave the youngest created at bath time tonight. I have one annoying brown area in the loo that won't disappear, it's about the size of a 2p coin and on the bend under the water. I've tried bleach and scrubbing but nothing shifts it. Any ideas?! The rest of the loo never even goes brown 🤷‍♀️

My extra room is the kitchen, hence the batch cooking all this week, which I have managed up until tonight when I accidentally forgot to buy a main ingredient 🤦‍♀️

Getting dc involved was a fail today but so far we've done well.

Going to meet a potential rescue dog tomorrow so fingers crossed we will be hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet here soon. Not the best weather for dog walking! Absolutely belting down with rain and sounds like the roof is blowing off 😱

frankiefirstyear · 16/02/2022 22:21

Posted too quick!

🍒👋 to everyone and I forget who said but I love the little accidental jobs that get done like cleaning a random cupboard while on with another job! I always feel a real sense of achievement and satisfaction for the 'extra' job well done.

Aw Frankie how lovely to have another family member 🐾🐾🐾

Thinking about the brown spot issue but would have thought bleach would nuke it. Is it limescale?

OP posts:
BeanAnTae · 16/02/2022 23:21

I wouldn't use the caustic soda one poster recommends but other ideas here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/housekeeping/834712-brown-toilet-stains-sorry-for-grim-question

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 16/02/2022 23:28

i just go for the soak for a few hours with cheap (ie own brand) full sugar coke. Gotta love the phosphoric acid component's ability to shift limescale etc.

Redsquirrel5 · 16/02/2022 23:35

Trouble is Frankie I didn’t finish the bathroom. Maybe tomorrow.

I would have thought bleach would do it too. You could try coke, I have heard other mumsnetters say to use that. Leave it overnight if possible.
🤞🏻🐕

Sing I thought you had a long list.

Zoo dare you to tell her how many hours sleep you have had tonight see link.

We can hear it.

WildPoinsettia · 16/02/2022 23:44

Frankie hope things go well with the rescue dog meeting, how exciting 🐺. I had the same issue with a brown toilet stain, larger than yours but in the same place. I give it a vigorous scrub each time and, so slowly it's been indescernable, over the years it has gradually gone away. Took about 3 years I think. I use Harpic in the black bottle, if that makes any difference, and I only clean the toilet once per week.

Bean my morning routine isn't quick or effecient either. I'm still at the stage where I'm happy it exists!

Hills I too and useless at going to bed at a decent hour. Reading the daily BabySteps I feel it at the end of her list, glowing at me in neon flashing lights through the screen GO TO BED. She knows my weakness. Hope you get a decent night's sleep 💤

Red I do that too. I am happy that I've done something though even if it wasn't what I planned.

I've been reading through the BabySteps tonight, trying to motivate myself to be more effective.

BeanAnTae · 17/02/2022 00:07

Sounds like you're doing great wild. Impressed with your perserverance to get that stain gone!

HillsBesideTheSea · 17/02/2022 00:35

Still in online training due to time zone differences. Definitely going to be a late one tonight. Bloody good training though so totally worth the effort.
I have about 40 pages of notes and cramp in my wrist. And so much to think about and return to.

SingToTheSky · 17/02/2022 00:51

Oof that is excellent commitment hills!

I am not asleep because I’m a muppet. Had some nice time with Cagbunny though 🥰

HillsBesideTheSea · 17/02/2022 05:49

Definitely regretting that late coffee.

So far i have learnt that there is mutterings that Storm Eunice might have a risk of a 1 in 25 years storm
The figure skating world is far more fucked up than I realised and yet exactly as fucked up as I knew it was.
I am not missing anything by having a very carefully curated social media presence/exposure and not watching tv or most streaming services.
I love the fact that tornados have the nickname of danger noodles
our heating has some very odd settings
And that every time my phone updates i am going to get booted out of gmail/youtube login on both phone and computer and I am going to have to reset the password because i have no fucking clue
Also that i appear to have run out of youtube content i wish to consume and need a new time waster.

Insomnia is the worst. I am bored and require breakfast. But not bored enough to get the day started when it has not even ended yet.

I hope you have all survived the storm and that you managed a good amount of restful sleep.

BeanAnTae · 17/02/2022 06:30

Yeah Hills stuff like training keeps your brain active and with coffee will nuke sleep.

Re Social media - am clearly reading too much as I thought we had chicken fillets in the fridge but it was an image from insta!

Morning all!

OP posts:
IWasWillingToGoWassailing · 17/02/2022 07:15

Morning all! Filthy weather here yesterday and many trees down in surrounding villages - DS2 may struggle to drop GF at work. Much of yesterday taken up with helping him rescue bedding, which had all gone mouldy stored under the bed in their unheated, uninsulated flat 🥶. The poor sausages are freezing but will only accept so much help from us because they are determined to Be Grown Up and Do It Their Own.

YesTaDa
❤️ Another brisk and efficient morning routine - it's really flowing now
🧡 Long discussion of how to demould flat, with DS2
💛 Started emptying study of Random Tat DH left behind in there
💚 Constant stream of visitors / deliveries. Surprised I have not worn a groove in the hall carpet
💙 Pest Control man says we have mice,.off the back field, not a rat. Phew. Measures put in place.
💜 Man came to quote for fitted cupboards / shelves in the fireplace alcoves in the study. Agrees we may need replastering and suggested lath and plaster ceiling may need to come down 😫
❤️ Possible funeral frocks delivered. Have chosen one.
🧡 Window cleaner came (more complex than it sounds as WassailHound needs locking in)
💛 Booked next half term of Pilates
💚 Booked DS3 a day of tennis camp for next week
💙 Saved all DS2's mouldy bedding with a long soak in borax solution followed by a hot wash with a hefty wallop of Vanish
💜 Ran out of energy with the study and feel very glum about it. Have no vision for how I want it to look.

🍒👋to everyone, all the personals have fallen out of my head! You all sound like you're doing well though, it's lovely to hear.

SingToTheSky · 17/02/2022 13:37

Morning… no wait. Afternoon. Been a long morning, but fairly easy really. And got some useful information that may help with DD1 (who didn’t even make it into school late today) as well as various work projects.

Now have some bacon grilling to have with fancypants filled pasta and pesto. Maths at 2.30.

I feel a bit stressed like my to do list is exploding again.

HillsBesideTheSea · 17/02/2022 14:34

Sing you've got this. Manage the to do list, don't let it bully you. Important, time sensitive, quick wins, one and dones.

I am feeling the same way and have just taken a master to do list by standing in each room and looking around. There are rooms that i am not going to touch at all, rooms i will only touch a small bit.

Just eating some breakfast as since getting have got fully caught up on weather, russia/ukraine, the people's stuff, email etc and will be then prioritising using the categories.

I have to write a complicated email which i am avoiding, but i also need to DO stuff rather than just plan stuff. So i need to figure that nonsense out.

BeanAnTae · 17/02/2022 18:58

Ooh I'm taking notes here Hills. Need to prioritise more.

Bean thanks for those threads! Very helpful I've never tried denture tabs 😃 will raid my dads at the weekend 😆 and my mums bottles of coke too while I'm at it! Thanks also hills for that suggestion.

Trying to wade myself up some major sh*t creeks atm, had to postpone dog meet because of dc dad terrorising me again. Losing the will today, especially after phoning completely useless 'dv/child helpline' and wasting the 30 mins alone time I had to speak freely today while a relative played with dc. Dc sensing weakness have been playing up and actually inked the new carpet which is a new and brutal blow to my tolerance, so all pens have been removed for two days. Then my helpful friend researched adhd symptoms, nudging me to look into that for the youngest. So yes, today has been quite a strain and suddenly wishing I had some alcohol in the house!

I did manage to baseline AND vacuum throughout the house including the stairs and the car boot, so that's a win in my book and was actually nice to disappear into the hum of the vacuum noise for a few minutes.
