please help - I don't know how to clean my american enamel self-cleaning oven (I know it sounds daft!)

Rented house, no guides with any appliances...American style oven with self-clean, enamel surface. Has a self-clean button. So I press this I presume, do I have to do anything else? How long do I leave it on for? How often should I be doing this? TIA

I have a De Detrich (sp, can't be bothered to look) my mistake was to not take the chrome shelves out - which are now not shiny!

I have 3 levels of pyro clean, I'm quite tolerent of a dirty oven so I do a high every few weeks after every oven cooked splashy fatty food, sausages or roast etc.

My instructions say it should be done on low more regularly, but mine takes so long to do a high (oven locked and unusable for 2.5 - 3 hrs) that it is a pita, I don't like to do it at night as, although our smoke detectors work well, I am a little nervous about safety.
