Anyone else feel like they are losing against the mess....

Ohhh man, just a vent really...

Every time I clean up more just appears! Anyone got any good tips to get back on top of it all again?

It's the post Christmas chaos and loads of toys etc with no where to live, plus a back load of laundry that I am losing against

I feel like all I've done today is clean and it's the end of the day now and everything still looks messy. Sigh.

Any messages of encouragement, motivation or solidarity appreciated in this time

X

I could have written your post; it was really getting me down earlier in the week but now I’m just accepting of it until school and work starts again

Be ruthless and ditch a load of stuff. In the weeks before Xmas I went through DDs room (7yo) and filled 8 bags for life with toys and clothes that she didn't need anymore. The good stuff went to the charity shop, the bad stuff to the rag bin.

Did the same in the living room, shed and my bedroom. Which resulted in 3 car loads of stuff to the tip and another couple of charity shop drops.

We'd already decided to be more restrained about gifts this year than last year, we went overboard last year to make up for all the Covid crap, so this year we pared right back and it's meant that even after the influx of new stuff everywhere feels much less cluttered. Looking forward to taking the Xmas decorations down now as everything will be much clearer.

Everything needs a place and if you don't have enough places then some things need to go. Be ruthless. I also have a box for things that don't belong in a certain room (such as my room) and fill it up and empty it weekly. Otherwise my room would also be awash with toys. But for other areas there are boxes (nice ones) - dress up, musical instruments, dinosaurs, toy medical equipment, Lego, blocks. Works pretty well!

Ohhhh I'm with you on this .... no motivational tips, sadly, but if you sit down with a small(ish) gin and tonic .... well, you won't be alone!! Wink
I'm sure I'll be better tomorrow, but for today ... it's be kind to me day! xx

Whoknowsweknows · 02/01/2022 13:45

Feeling exactly the same. Spent all week cleaning, sorting and tidying anddddd it’s still a bloody mess!

Kshhuxnxk · 02/01/2022 13:48

I was you till yesterday and just decided enough was enough and I just needed to get my arse in gear. Washed and tumble dried all day to get it all shifted. Will iron when making dinner and generally just trying to keep it tidied.

Try watching sort your life out on iplayer

Some really good advice here thanks! I need to categorise toyboxes like that as its just a free for all at the moment.

I too have got my bum into gear today and been doing loads of laundry... managed to blitz the kitchen properly which is a start! we still have a way to go but it's an improvement

Once DD is back at nursery I'll have a bit more time to get sorted. Until then just doing what I can. Temporary acceptance haha

I feel your pain! I spent my afternoon with DC, going through their rooms. 5 bin-bags later, we are feeling a lot lighter.

I can't wait to take the secs down next

I could have written this post 😭 feel like the whole Christmas break I've been clearing up straight after everything, mission declutter and everything still looks the same 🤦🏻‍♀️

MrsGatsby99 · 03/01/2022 07:48

Flylady saved us! 😃
Now doing a simplified version of it.
Morning and evening routine plus 2 clutter stops per day (5 - 10 mins pick up and put away). Makes a massive difference.
Also, decide on one area where clutter builds up and clear it for just two minutes per day.
Key is doing it every day. Set a timer. Try it for one week and see what you think.
Also i learnt this when i did waittessing as a student, never have empty hands ie when you pass something and see it is out of place, pick it up and put it back. Tedious but you do it without thinking after a while.

Good luck.
Ps my house is not perfect but it's good enough.

Same for us here. Cleared out before Christmas but everyone has been generous and nowhere to put all new toys. I've accepted the mess until school starts, just enjoy time with kids then I can magically find storage!
