Dirty rug driving me mad

I just moved to a house with wooden floors and I bought a rug so my LO wouldn't get cold playing on the floor. I love the rug bit it gathers sooo much dirt and dust. I have to hoover it every day and even then it never looks clean! How do I solve this problem? It's driving me mad!!!

Do you have any ventilation thingies? Like, those little grill things in the walls? Check and see if they're clean and working properly.

Your problem isn't so much how to keep the rug clean as to why is it getting that dirty....is the room opening out onto a main street or something?

Are you wearing shoes in the house? What is causing it to get dirty?

IDontThinkSoJohn · 23/12/2021 09:56

Yes, no shoes in that room at all. And maybe Hoover elsewhere less often rather than the rug every day. The dust must be coming from somewhere!

ohidoliketobe · 23/12/2021 09:58

Agree it's a case of working out the cause of the dust. Are the wooden floors sealed? Could any dust be coming up through the sub floor?

We never wear outdoor shoes in the house and the living room is away from the front/back door. There is an old vent in the wall but have no idea if it works or if it needs cleaned!

Is it a wool rug? They can moult for a while when new, so they look dirty but they're not!

Bare feet can spread body oils onto rugs and carpets, which then attract more dirt, especially synthetic fibres. And that happens surprisingly fast. Test if it's really dirty by wiping with a clean damp white towel. If it is, hire or buy a carpet cleaner. Make sure the detergent is diluted properly, detergent residue will also attract dirt.

Also, if your hard floors are not spotlessly clean, that little bit of dirt/dust will walk onto the rug, so the rug is working rather like a doormat, collecting dirt. So keep an eye on the cleanliness of the hard floor too.
